Can i chance machine washing dry clean curtains?

I bought some blackout curtains for my baby's room. Took me 2 months to figure that the funky burning plastic smell is from the curtains. Google is making me more certain. I want to wash them in the machine as i dont want to dry clean them. Also i dont think dry cleaning has a particularly fresh smell like machine washing.

Can i chance it. Any tips to help me get this smell out?

I've washed dry clean only dunelm curtains on a short hand wash cycle. It really annoyed me that it would cost more to dry clean than the curtains cost!

I had blackouts that had a plasticky backing on the fabric - sprayed on IYKWIM. I washed them & it bubbled or came off in spots.

They weren't great curtains... I put up with it till I could afford to replace them.

My experience with blackouts in general hasn't been great. We had problems with condensation until we had our windows replaced & some got mildew spots on them. I prefer a heavy lined pair of normal ones.

Apparently it's the spinning, not the washing, that shrinks items.

So wash on a cool wash and drip dry.

Those curtains are lovely by the way! I machine wash DD's expensive school blazer and so glad I did. I didn't realise so many other people avoid the dry cleaner's like I do!

I once had a lovely coat that needed cleaning and was dry clean only. I wassi disappointed when it came back with no smell. I wanted a clean smell and it still looked grubby. Probably dipped it in water Hmm

Ive left it for now as i haven't smelled them since the heatwave has reduced. If the sun isnt as strong i may leave it through Autumn/Winter. Im truly 50/50 Confused

Thanks all

Polycotton is polyester cotton.
I wash curtains quite regularly. Cotton ones tend to shrink so don't hem until after they've been washed.
The polycotton won't shrink but the lining might. I would hand wash in cool water.

I have inexplicably got a setting for Curtains on my washing machine. I've never washed a curtain in my life. But I do use the Jeans wash on a regular basis for almost everything, because it's short.
My tip: avoid Indesit.
