Cleaning toilet seats - sorry, bit grim

Can anyone advise as to the best way of cleaning white toilet seats that have become discoloured? It's the underneath of the seat where it's gone a bit yellowy Blush and scrubbing with normal cleaner doesn't seem to cut it. Any thoughts or do I need to look at replacing?

Neat bleach? Baking soda and lemon juice? Scrub and leave for a while before rinsing.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 26/07/2018 09:17

Neat bleach on loo roll and dab it on and leave overnight. Not the cheap bleach, domestos or similar which is thicker.

Chinnyreckoning · 26/07/2018 09:17

I soaked cotton balls in bleach and stuck them on. Worked a treat

Nanasueathome · 26/07/2018 09:31

My toilet seat clips off.
I take it off and soak it in ariel

ashgrove1 · 26/07/2018 09:33

It's probably bleach that is the culprit. Bleach yellows plastic after a while. If it's yellow it's beyond saving I'm afraid.

cashmerecardigans · 26/07/2018 09:40

Wow thanks everyone. Im going to see if it clips off first, like the soaking idea, but will try bleach if not.
ashgrove for my sins I'm not a great bleach user, so not sure it's that, but I can see it might discolour in the long run.

Magic erasers are also good

MunchMunch · 26/07/2018 14:53

The yellow will probably be wee stains. If you have ds' like mine when they were smaller they'd rest their willy on the toilet seat and I'd have the inevitable drips on the seat and on the lip on the underside. I used to just clean it as best I could and then change the seat every now and again.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 26/07/2018 14:55

Magic eraser sponge here too. I keep old ones for this purpose.

GinghamChicken · 26/07/2018 15:10

Spray with WD40. Magic!

Yogagirl123 · 26/07/2018 15:22

Replace the loo seat, you can buy them very cheaply online.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 26/07/2018 15:35

Oooh wd40 never tried that. I've tried it for most things.

puppydogmummy · 26/07/2018 18:33

I use Ajax or some kind or slightly abrasive cleaner and it works a treat!

Idbemonica1 · 26/07/2018 19:36

Another vote for magic erasers here.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 26/07/2018 19:41

Not a tip unfortunately but I did see someone on here once who claimed to put it in the dishwasher 🤮Shock

Knittedfairies · 26/07/2018 19:42

I read recently that WD40 would do the job. Not tried it though.

Maybugger · 26/07/2018 19:45

Replace it with a black one!

hairyscarey · 27/07/2018 11:11

Magic erasers do the trick. We have two identical seats. Can't remember the make but bought at same time and expensive. Both are cleaned the same way however the one that is least used (downstairs) is yellow underneath.
There's only me and DP in house so I don't know what caused it but magic eraser cleaned it. It's happening again (to same one, so I need to get eraser out again)

ChishandFips33 · 03/08/2018 13:05

Yes to bleach yellowing them - haven't made that mistake again!

Now use bicarb and vinegar

crimsonlake · 04/08/2018 10:01

Agree, bleach causes the white seat to go yellow.

stressedoutpa · 04/08/2018 22:06

Take it off, turn it upside down, dowse it with water and sprinkle some bio washing powder on it to make a paste. Leave it for as long as you can then give it a good scrub. Repeat as many times as necessary.

It's the only thing that has worked for me.

cleancleanclean · 05/08/2018 06:27

treadsoftly dishwashers are amazing! If I had a bigger house, I'd have at least 2 - one for the dishes and one for the potty, toilet seat, shower caddy, etc! I do wash children's plastic toys in the dishwasher but would never dream of putting a loo seat in one that was used for dishes!
