Wooden Floors - how do you clean them

heifer · 30/05/2007 11:12

I have solid Oak wooden floors, but not sure how to clean them...

I am sure that you can't just use mop and bucket as normal (assuming you shouldn't get them too wet)

So far have been using babywipes, so not a great long term plan...

What do you use?

Have posted on your other thread, heifer. Microfibre again, probably.

cheers jackieno... are you housework goddess?

I can't believe that I am 39 years old and still don't know how to clean my house properly!..

cheers for the help..

I am enjoying looking at the lakeland site - never know how I managed without all this stuff all these years (well I do, my house wasn't that clean obviously, or so well organised),, but all that is going to change....

it depends if they are waxed or varnished/lacquered really

PetronellaPinkPants · 30/05/2007 11:23

here

we have one that is finished with hardwax oil and we clean it with a specialist cleaner, dilute it in a spray bottle, spray it on and mop it off immediately. Every few months we bung on another coat of hardwax oil to any bits that need it (v easy)

I'm definitely not a housework goddess - I just like reading about it, rather than doing it, iyswim.

we have varnished wooden floors and I use hot soapy water with rags on my hands and knees
every couple of weeks or so

BettySpaghetti · 30/05/2007 11:36

We use a Pledge one -its a liquid, you add a capful to a bucket of water and use a mop.

We've used it on our varnished floorboards and parquet flooring for years. Just don't get it too wet.

Is your oak floor sealed/varnished/oiled?

JackieNo · 30/05/2007 11:36

YOu can just use water and soapy stuff, but it doesn't like getting wet, so you need to wring cloths out really well. Also, 'ordinary' soap might leave a bit of a dull residue, but would probably be OK if you went over it again after with just plain water (again, well wrung out).

heifer · 30/05/2007 11:39

just asked DH (as I didn't know)..

he thinks our oak floorboards are waxed, but not really sure tbh, but he ruled out varnished and lacquered!..

So, will ecloth on its own do, I do I need water and cleaning stuff?

I've just been to read the label and at the moment its not the Pledge one we have its one by Astonish -the label says "suitable for all wooden sealed floors".

I think the Pledge one was more detailed so it might be best to have a look at whats available and read some labels. Also you could contact a flooring company and ask their advice.

We have varnished wooden floor (solid wood, not laminate) in our kitchen and dining room. I use the Ecover wooden floor cleaner and think it's tops!

heifer · 30/05/2007 12:19

Jamantha can you do a link please?

OP posts:
MadamePlatypus · 30/05/2007 12:44

Diluted Ecover washing up liquid and wrung out squeegee mop.

LIZS · 30/05/2007 12:51

oo where dod you find that Jamantha ? Have been using the Pledge one but don't like to use it too often although it is hard as our whole ground floor, apart from the lounge, is wooden floored. I use a Vileda microfibre "mop" to sweep each day and wondered if spraying a dilute mixture of cleaner and wiping over with it would be less harsh than a wet mop.

AuldAlliance · 30/05/2007 13:13

Diluted O-Cedar with a well wrung out mop.

Blackduck · 30/05/2007 13:21

Eco floor cleaner - the smell....mummmmm....(linseed...)

PizPizPiz · 30/05/2007 17:52

I use Mr Sheen for wooden floors and I try not to over wet the rug. It does a good job and I love the smell.

rowan1971 · 30/05/2007 17:59

Jamantha - they sell Ecover floor soap in Waitrose, for sure. It does smell yummy - somewhere between linseed oil and barley sugar. hmmmmmmm

rowan1971 · 30/05/2007 17:59

Sorry, that last for LIZS, not Jamantha.

Jamantha · 30/05/2007 18:45

I use Ecover Floor Cleaner with linseed oil

MusicLover · 01/06/2007 00:20
