Satisfying things about keeping house

andalittlebitofpixiedust · 20/07/2018 20:08

Tell me the satisfying things about home making, keeping house, cleaning, tidying, etc.

I usually see it as just a chore, or something I don't quite have time for, but I know I can find truly positive things that make me happy about a job well done. Things to motivate me.

So, I LOVE getting into a bed with clean sheets. LOVE IT.

I really love the feeling of everything being in the right place, and knowing where to find things.

I like the feeling of making things nice for my children. doesn't happen often

In my previous house I had tiles in the kitchen that when mopped or steam mopped had a really satisfying appearance to them. I loved watching the moisture evaporate off them gradually. My new house had horrible textured vinyl flooring and it doesn’t do the same thing at all. I seriously miss my tiles just for that one thing. I’m a cleaner and I get excited when I start a house that has the same type of tiles. Mopping is the best part of the job and is always the last job so is a great way to finish. How pathetic is that? Grin

AWoman nothing pathetic about it on this thread! I am trying to get over ant idea that it is boribg or sad to actually enjoy looking after your house. I think that's why I like watching those you tubers who clean and organise... Why not enjoy it? Why not respect it? Why not take enormous satisfaction in a job well done?

I like your thinking OP.

Cleaning can be very satisfying for those who are into it. I am. I watch those YouTube videos too! We should be able to say we enjoy it. I suppose it’s a bit like people who really love cooking. I don’t. I hate it. Hate having to think about food, hate the fact I have to eat everyday. I guess some people feel like that about cleaning. I would far rather wash the cooking pots from an extravagant meal than hear a single word about how it was cooked.

No doubt keeping a house spotlessly clean and tidy is a lot of hard work but so worth it, the sense of calm and tranquility in my house is bliss,so that is the reward, calmness, it’s good for my soul!

It’s effing DRAWERS DRAWERS DRAWERS

As you were.

Vitalogy · 21/07/2018 04:18

Why not enjoy it? Why not respect it? Why not take enormous satisfaction in a job well done? That's it, it's gotta be done, so better that than make a drudge and misery out of it. It can be used to practice meditation by being in the moment.

hibeat · 21/07/2018 04:35

I like it when it's my husband who does it...He make the kitchen pristine, cleans the floors and clears the living room, that's about it. plus two hot meals for the week. But boy it's good.

Clean sheets with clean pjs and a shower with hair wash before bed, nothing like it

A nicely made bed

A freshly hoovered carpet

A newly mown lawn (with the smell of fresh cut grass still lingering) sorry for the slight tangent!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 21/07/2018 05:14

Since doing Marie Kondo & minimalism it takes me sooooo much less time to tidy up so I enjoy it more as less effort to get to the reward of the end result. It also helps that my cleaner does all the mopping of floors, deep cleaning of kitchen / bathroom etc. I enjoy organising things and getting rid of clutter! So calming

I like seeing a line full of washing and I LOVE the smell of clothes, sheets towels dried outside. Mmm mm.

Clean sheets (especially in the summer when they have been on the line!)
Mopped tiles floors - no bits sticking to your feet or black soles
Tidying away toys ready for the next days play
No fingerprints on brushed steel cookers/hob/fridge/island stools Grin

If it helps OP I use the organised mom method and although I've adapted it for my own house I apply the same principles and basically give myself my weekends off and sometimes a Friday too if I have been a whizz at my timings in the other rooms (she works on a 30 min per room effort!)

andalittlebitofpixiedust · 21/07/2018 14:58

Ah, thank you, I do like her videos. I can't commit to a routine for many dull reasons but I think the house is not too bad actually... I'm just working on my attitude :)

Oh yes the washing line full (I have a huge four sided whirly , it has a handle to crank it high/low. Over 14 years old now and nothing out there to replace it)
All the towels and bedding blowing about.

And using a new washing detergent (I know , sad life yes).
I'm alternating between Tesco and Waitrose at the oment but I got some Aldi tablets and I'm unreasonably chuffed at how nice it smells Blush

Enervator · 03/08/2018 23:40

Bump... I wiped a completely totally clear countertop today. Nothing on it at all..... Soooo satisfying!

HollowTalk · 03/08/2018 23:45

Like you, I love getting into a fresh, clean bed. I change my bedding every 3rd day. I love to see washing hanging on the line to dry. I like to have a spotlessly clean toilet (I clean it a few times each day), I have to have clean dishcloths, towels and teatowels every day (the dishcloths are changed a few times every day)

I think you're going a bit overboard, @Lynne1Cat!

FeckingFeckers · 03/08/2018 23:56

Freshly cleaned and ironed bedding

A sofa with the cushion covers freshly washed - ditto curtains

The lines left in carpets when you vacuum

Freshly cleaned mirrors/glass furniture

When you've ironed the clean washing and it's stacked into a neat little pile on the stairs ready to be taken up and put away

The kitchen sink when the washing up is put away, no pots or pans there and everything is clean and dry and ridiculously shiny

Also when every plate and glass is put away and the cupboard is stacked nicely with the glasses all lined up in neatly

Wood flooring just after it's been steam cleaned - I have to admit to standing in the hallway and looking down through the hall into the living room and admiring how the light shines onto the floor to reveal absolutely nothing, not one paw print of foot print or random mark Grin
