Ironing tips

Can someone please help. I'm sooo new to this.

When you do your batch of ironing, what is your set up? I currently iron every day as I cant think of anything worse than standing at an ironing board for an hour. My feet would be killing for a start. Then back, I'd be so bored.

It's such an issue getting the iron and ironing board out every day so it stays up. I don't have a utility room so it's messy.

Please advise what you all normally do?

I don't do much ironing, but some things need it, so I do those.
Bring your washing in before it gets as dry as a bone.
Set up the ironing board and switch on the iron.
Start of with things that only need a warm iron, like t-shirts. Put in a neat pile unfolded.
When the iron is hot, do the things that need a hot iron, like shirts.
Iron each shirt in exactly the same way.
Hang shirts on a hanger.
If anything is creased, use a damp muslin cloth between the item and the iron.
Switch off iron, and as it cools do more things that only need a warm iron.
Put the iron aside to cool down, and put away the ironing board.
Pat yourself on the back, and hang shirts, dresses and skirts in the wardrobe.
Take the pile of t-shirts and fold neatly and put in your t-shirt drawer.
Ironing over for a week.

I find that a glass or wine and a favourite telly programme or pop music helps a lot.

If you iron things just before you wear them, the item will be difficult to iron and the iron will need to warm up.

I refuse to wear fitted shirts or shirts with lycra in them because I hate ironing them.

I don't use the spray from the iron, I use a plant spray instead as I live in a hard water area.

Your iron needs to be clean.

I have a t-shirt folding thing, which I like. It's like this one www.ebay.co.uk/i/263757925626?chn=ps

I iron shirts starting with the under collar, then top collar, yoke, front left, back, front right, Right sleeve cuff, right sleeve cuff opening side up then the other side, then left sleeve. Doing the same way each time means I don't forget to do all of it.

I iron skirts and t-shirts inside out.

A steam generator iron transforms the experience of ironing. When my last one packed up, I dug out my old bog standard steam iron, and even grown up son refused to think of sticking with it. I hated ironing until I got one. Now I don't mind it.

I start with the hideous (king size sheets) and finish with tea towels. I know they don't need ironing, but it takes seconds, and it's satisfying to see piles of freshly ironed laundry.

I have one of those three arm hanging stations from Aldi and load one arm with hangers before I start. Clear a space for anything that doesn't hang. I have a heated drying rack that I use in the winter, but use it all year round for piling on ironed items. I always have music on. Son does his own and his brother's ironing (sooo many shirts) and has ipad on with TV episodes.

I don't have a utility room as such, but I do have a back porch which has room for washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing stuff. If I leave board up, it's hard to get to downstairs loo, so I tend to iron once or twice a week.

I'm with Cynderella on this one.

I hated ironing with a passion until I got a high spec steam generating iron.

It makes two weeks ironing (+ shirts) for 6 people vanish in about an hour.

I listen to Ted talks or audio books whilst I iron.

I stopped ironing 3 years ago. I no longer own an ironing board or iron.

Nothing needs ironing except a pair of linen trousers and I just lay those under my mattress and in the morning they are flat.

Life is much too short.

jelliebelly · 21/07/2018 11:11

I iron very little these days - pay somebody else to iron dh work shirts. When I do have a pile worth doing though I always listen to an audiobook or watch tv - never leave the ironing board up though - fold it and store in the cupboard under the stairs - would drive me potty seeing it all the time.

Lying them under the mattress is a fab idea!!! Do you think I could do this with every item of clothing??

Do you all stand up and iron for an hour? I really struggle to stand for that long. I have a steam iron but seems to use so much water! Every other item I am refilling with water.

You probably don’t need to iron more than a couple of things if you are careful with what you buy, dry things on hangers, fold it properly etc. So, yes, chuck it all under the mattress.

0range99 · 21/07/2018 11:59

I don't iron. I used to spend hours doing it and then realised if you give everything a quick tumble to heat it up, shake it and fold or hang, 95% of stuff doesn't need to be ironed.

Cynderella · 21/07/2018 13:13

Is there a reason you can't stand for an hour? I'm really unfit, but I'd be worried if I couldn't stand up for a couple of hours!

Oopsy41 · 21/07/2018 13:21

I sit down on my bed with the ironing board in front of me, much easier on my back

USER11121 · 24/07/2018 15:17

I injured my back a little while ago, and it causes me major issues now.

I might try setting it up and using a dining room chair.

Next question - does anyone do washing and end up with white lines in clothes?
