Mouse been on my expensive soft toys :-(

I know what the answer is, but I need to hear it from other people. A mouse has been in my nursery (I'm 8 months PG with my first) and walked all over the expensive Disney soft toys I bought to decorate the room. As they're intended to be decorative, I don't think they will survive a machine wash and still look good, so Im trying to come to terms with the fact I'm going to have to throw them away and replace. There's over £100 worth of them. Any last suggestions before I spend £100 of my baby's money buying stuff I already had? Sad

Why would you throw them out? Just give them a quick sponge wash if you're worried. Mice probably walk all over a everything without us ever knowing! Try not to panic x

CurlsLDN · 11/07/2018 09:52

Keep them! As you say they are decorative, so don't put them in your newborns bed. By the time your baby is old enough to want to play with them he or she will be rugged enough to handle a 6 month old mouse footprint! Every time baby crawls in the park, the village hall, your garden etc they will be encountering the same

Spray with an anti bacterial spray like dettol and then wipe over and leave to dry.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 11/07/2018 09:55

I would put them in a bag or pillowcase and put them in the washing machine. You have nothing to lose.

I've machine washed tonnes of soft toys over the years (including all the ones that tell you to only clean on the surface using a sponge).

Also, once baby is on the move good luck with the toys being decorative only Grin

Spray them with detol

xwhoiamx · 11/07/2018 11:03

Dettol might be a good idea! I'm very aware my child will one day want to play with these items - which is why I'm freaking out so much about the mouse wee thing. Imagine him putting a pissy Mickey in his mouth Shock Confused

Oh gosh I hate to shatter the PFB illusions (I was the same) but your child will attempt to put no end of gross things in their mouth and live to tell the tale. Just put them in the bath tub with some washing up liquid, squeeze them out and put them on the line.

Coming from someone who's PFB has recently started crawling. And who also has mice and recently did the same with her toys.

Bellabutterfly2016 · 11/07/2018 11:09

You can buy detol wash stuff now too if you want to be 100% sure.
Hopefully they didn't get nibbled at 🐭

LemonScentedStickyBat · 11/07/2018 11:12

Never yet had a soft toy ruined by a machine wash - put in pillowcase, delicate setting :)

DiabolicalMess · 11/07/2018 11:49

Zoflora?

mrsoutnumbered · 11/07/2018 14:10

Agree - if you're nervous about Mach one washing them, then sponge clean and then spray with that Dettol aerosol (which I used to think was a bit silly but now actually quite like!).

I think a machine wash on a hand wash setting will be okay though. Unless there's anything glittery? That might go a bit funny.

TheFifthKey · 11/07/2018 14:14

Diluted Zoflora in a spray bottle would disinfect and also smell nice.

NerrSnerr · 11/07/2018 14:27

If they're Disney soft toys then they'll be fine to go in the washing machine. What will you do if your child does a poo or vomits all over them our house has just recovered from a sickness bug and everything has been washed as it's had one or the other on it

GinIsIn · 11/07/2018 14:30

In a year’s time, when your child has eaten a slug/woodlouse/dog food, it won’t seem s bad! Grin

LIZS · 12/07/2018 22:15

But you are not concerned about potential mouse pee on the carpet or other parts of room or nursery furniture ? Confused

CornishPasty82 · 12/07/2018 22:18

Mice don’t cary any (dangerous) diseases, so you’ll be fine. Plus, the fact that you saw a mouse do this means mice are doing this all over your house. By your own logic you should buy a new house😂😂😂

If you are THAT worried, pay for someone to exterminate the mice and then perhaps have your house deep cleaned. But really, replacing the toys is useless as another mouse will simply do the same.

perhapstomorrow · 12/07/2018 22:23

I've put lots of Disney soft toys through the wash and they've all been fine. Just use a cool wash.

xwhoiamx · 12/07/2018 23:27

Thanks all, I'll try some variation of the antibacterial surface method and try not to worry too much about it. I do know that the toys will need washing one day, I just kinda hoped they would make it to the day my kid is actually born without needing a wash Sad. My washing machine is crap and doesn't take cold water in anymore so no cool cycles for me until I can afford to replace it. So surface cleaning it is.

By the way, everything else I know the mouse has been on is cleanable (hard surfaces, bed linen, carpets...) - hence it was just the stuffed toys I was worried about. And it just felt neglectful to NOT wash toys, of all things. Confused

Put them outside in the sunshine.
