My wife and I have recently moved between rental properties. We were evicted from our old property as it was no longer fit for habitation, due to the landlord not repairing severe damp and mould. We had been in there for almost three years, and due to the mould and general disrepair, we didn't keep up with the housework as much as we should have (I have MH issues and chronic pain and it became very demotivating cleaning around large patches of black mould).
Now we are all moved in, I've been trying to make sure we stay on top of keeping the new house clean and tidy. In order to keep me motivated, I've been trying to notice the positives to each task being completed, even the ones I hate doing. So far, I have:
Hanging out the washing makes the house and garden smell of clean laundry and the washing doesn't need ironing unless it's work clothes so less work overall. We didn't have a washing line in old house so also saving money. (I've completely fallen in love with walking down the garden surrounded by the smell of freshly washed laundry. It makes me feel so accomplished)
Doing the washing up regularly means I have space on our kitchen counters to bake.
Opening the windows daily means the house smells lovely and stays cool.
Wiping down the bathroom every few days means I can relax in the bath without noticing dirt.
A quick 15 minute pick up of clutter in the living room means I can sit and eat or watch TV without feeling bad that I should be cleaning.
Im loving having a house we can be proud of, and I finally feel like I'm getting into a routine. But what am I forgetting? What haven't I discovered the joy of yet? Tell me which chore makes you think, I'm so glad I've done that, it's made such a big difference! Why does it improve your life? I want to know!
