Cleaning up vomit (sorry!)

Sorry, hope no one is eating lunch!

Dd had quite a spectacular vomiting session yesterday. Luckily all on the hard floor, so it wasn’t too bad to clean up. But I did wonder how I’d have managed if it had been on the carpet and/ or the sofa.

What’s the best strategy oh wise ones? So I can be prepared for next time!

Scrape, wash and dry. Grin

If you have some, sprinkle with sawdust and wait a few minutes first. It absorbs the liquid and the smell.

I used to work in a nightclub where obviously vomit on carpet was a nightly occurrence.

We had a hefty supply of cat litter. Generously cover the vomit with the litter and give it a moment or two to soak up then sweep with a brush.

I always have some at home for this reason.

Scrape up as much as you can, then cover the area with baking soda for as long as possible, then hoover it up. And febreeze!

Loving the cat litter idea!

After I've cleaned it up I usually wipe the area clean with zoflora. Afterwards I spray that dettol disinfectant spray (I used to think it was a bit of a useless product, but it's great at shifting the smell!).

Scrape up as much as possible and then coat with bicarbonate of soda. Once dry vacuum up and scrub it completely.

DS1 was prone to sick bugs as a small child and I became the queen of removing vomit smells from everything!

In fact I watched Obama’s inauguration elbow deep in milk sick down the back of my sofa!

After scraping up vomit from carpet I soak a cloth with diluted upholstery cleaner and dab it on the area. Then to disinfect I spray on diluted vinegar. That completely neutralizes the smell and is a natural disinfectant. I too like the cat litter idea, never thought of it before. Think I'll buy some coz scraping up vomit is awful.

Thanks! Great tips. I’m definitely going to get some cat litter and a bulk quantity of bicarb to have in hand.

What’s the best tool for scraping it up though?

I use a paper plate if I have them on hand. I usually have a stack of paper plates coz they are good for craft activities and for days when I want a break from washing dishes.

I’ve got a car window scraper just for that. Never gets used for anything else and is kept in the utility room in a zip lock bag.

Dough scraper and an industrial tub of bicarb. I picked that tip up from Esther Coren.
