How to get white bedlinen really white using only eco friendly detergent (no bleach etc)??

Can anyone suggest anything?
We only have white bedlinen and it is all looking bit grey/off colour as I use eco detergent - am a bit of an eco warrier!
Are there other ways to get it looking pristine?
TIA

You could colour it in with white felt tip I suppose?

I use BANG AND THE DIRT IS GONE

colditz · 23/05/2007 21:39

Hang it outside in fine weather and leave it out until it has rained and dried again.

SenoraPostrophe · 23/05/2007 21:40

yes, sun is good.

as is dying everything beige.

PrettyCandles · 23/05/2007 21:40

Hang it outdoors in bright sunshine. Sunlight bleaches. It oculd also be looking a bit grey if you don't use enough detergent. Try doing a hotter wash with more detergent as a one-off. If it comes out white then you'll know the reason why.

ArcticRoll · 23/05/2007 21:40

Hang on line in sunny weather-the sun will bleach it(in theory).

Chandra · 23/05/2007 21:41

Well, if this were a hot sunny country... Sun light would help.

From the ecologist point of view, the only thing I would suggest is getting unbleached cotton bedlinen next time, it ages better than whites while protecting the environment

I'm not helping, am I?

BettySwallocks · 23/05/2007 21:42

buy new ones?

MrsSnoek · 23/05/2007 21:44

Having tried and tested lots of eco friendly washing powders and liquids I have arrived to the conclusion that they are great for the environment but non effective to wash my clothes propertly (especially the whites).

I now use only Fairy liquid and try to hang my clothes outside.

babygrand · 23/05/2007 21:45

We also have white bedlinen. We treat ourselves to a new set every year or so. It's not just trying to keep it white, but any stitching, fringes, lacy bits etc, do start to fray.

babygrand · 23/05/2007 21:46

I agree - eco-friendly washing liquids aren't so good on whites. What about using them on the rest of your laundry, but not on white bedlinen?

Pannacotta · 23/05/2007 21:48

Some of it is organic/unbleached so that may be part of the problem. Wish I liked coloured sheets but I don't. Really don't want to buy new either, as have lots of bedlinen already, all good quality.
Will try haning it in the sun and washing at higher temp (thou often do at 60 degrees)...

Do you use fabric conditioner? Why not try vinegar in the final rinse instead?

Pannacotta · 23/05/2007 22:33

Will vinegar make a difference to the colour?

Tie dye them

Zofloyya · 23/05/2007 22:38

something to soften the water maybe, if you're in a hard water area? I have white bedlinen, only use Clear Spring or Ecover laundry liquid, and don't have this problem at all - but our water is fairly soft

squidette · 23/05/2007 23:20

Ecover do a Laundry Bleach powder that i use for school shirts and sheets only. I find it very good if i add some to the powder drawer with a little borax, lemon juice and washing soda.

moondog · 23/05/2007 23:22

I only use Ecover and my stuff is fine...
However did run my white bedlinen (like you it's all i have) throughthe machine with a Dayglo (?) packet or summat last week and they are looking great.

squidette · 23/05/2007 23:25

oo, had another thought. Have you tried Oxi-clean? As far as i know, its ok eco-warrier-wise

choosyfloosy · 23/05/2007 23:30

Soak in cold water before wash?

This is more about stains i suppose.

I always wash with Ecover washing liquid and ecover laundry bleach to help keep our linen white.

Pannacotta · 24/05/2007 20:59

Thanks all, will experiment with your suggestions, otherwise it might be a shopping spree for me
