Clutter and MH

Getting rid of all the clutter is the single thing that has improved my mental health the most. DH started the process while I was suffering with poor MH and over the past year we slowly decluttered most of the house. There’s a few more things to go (the loft needs a serious de clutter).
As the house has become orderly my MH improved. I can now clean the house much more easily which in turn improved my health.
Just thought I’d share

It really does help. I'm decluttering at the moment and it's really cathartic. Can be hard letting go at times, but I never regret giving/throwing something away. My mental health suffers if the clutter starts to build up again.

Glad your health has improved Smile

I can totally identify with this. I've been doing the Marie Kondo declutter for over a year, slowly working through the categories. I've got quite a bit still to do, and think I will do the whole lot again when i finish, but it has really helped with my mental health. I feel much calmer and have fewer mood swings, kids say I am less shouty, depression is much more manageable, I feel less embarrassed about people visiting which has reduced my anxiety. I've tried decluttering lots of times in the past and failed and didn't really expect a lot this time, but it is working and things are staying organised, so I'd recommened Marie Kondo to anyone who has struggled with decluttering in the past.

This is interesting, thanks for sharing:)

I get very irritatable with clutter in the house. I keep trying Kondo but there is still more to do.

I am trying to focus on bringing less stuff into the house but with a toddler I am losing that battle.

This is what I need to hear- I am currently having a big clear out. I’m a childminder and always worry that I need lots of toys and ‘resources’ but actually it’s surprising how little you need.

I didn’t actually realise it was the state of the house that made me so ill. Low moods and anxiety are so much easier to cope with now

I get really stressed and pissed off if the house is a mess and really enjoy a good declutter. I'm trying to clear the wardrobes at the moment. It's a slow process.

anotherangel2 I think it's incredibly hard with small children. Mine are teenagers now but I found when they were small it was so difficult to stop the house being filled with mountains of toys and equipment.

If you haven't been put off Kondo, I've found the Konmari UK fb group very helpful for ideas and encouragement.
