Cleaning a canvas bag

I've just got this out of the back of the wardrobe - it is filthy! I'd like to use it if possible - any thoughts about the best way to clean it? It's past the light sponging stage I think!

The colour may run if you wash it. I would give it a hoover then sponge it.
Or I would dip the handles or base only in some water to see if the colour runs.

Good idea about checking for colour run - and the hoovering - will give that a go. My mum suggested putting it in the washing machine on a delicate cycle - I think that is probably a last resort Hmm

Use warm water if you are dipping a corner to see if the colour runs.
I would probably hand wash it in tepid water.

You could always take a soft soapy nailbrush to it, and dry it in the sunshine. Maybe do the inside this way first, to see how well it cleans up? If you decide to machine wash, I would highly recommend using a "colour catcher" cloth in with it. This would hopefully absorb the excess dye.

Great idea, Caroline.

Yes the colour catchers are a lifesaver! I use a cloth one from Lakeland which can be used many times. The disposable ones are a) wasteful and b) have a fragrance added, which I hate. Best of luck with the bag ;-)
