They are starting to look a bit manky, black bits etc, some on the grout but also on the mastic stuff at the bottom.
Any ideas or tips gratefully received.

TIA

ooh I've got some brilliant stuff (if you don't object to vicious chemicals) but will have to pop upstairs to see what it is called.. will post later (can't go right now as DD asleep on sofa and will roll off if I leave her)

Neat bleach and a toothbrush works wonders.

Surfermum · 21/05/2007 21:53

Yep, bleach and a toothbrush is brilliant. Do it when you're angry, it's very therapeutic.

cillit bang stuff & a toothbrush.

ghastly ad. but my grout isn't brown anymore.

fruittea · 21/05/2007 21:54

agree- toothbrush best tool. HG do a mould remover which is good - hardware shop. Then whiten up with a grout pen - International do one.

TBH when the mastic goes it's not always easy to clean up, but it's not too bad to redo - cut away bulk, then clean up with white spirit, then replace.

Steam cleaning afterwards helps to keep it at bay for longer as the heat kills the mould 100% efficiently. There are usually a few little buggers which escape the bleach treatment which you won't see now but will start to grow again soon

HG - that's the one - and I don't bother with the toothbrush (too much like hard work). Did give DH a shock when I covered the shower in it and left it overnight and forgot that he was going to be first up, though

We spruced up our bathroom last week. Firstly scrubbed grout with cillit bang and a toothbrush (just the black bits round near the shower) then used Grout Renovator £3.99 from Wilkinsons - goes on like a shoe polish with a sponge applicator but squeezy tube. Paint it on, leave to dry, rub off the excess from the tiles and hey presto, like new.

stealthsquiggle · 21/05/2007 22:10

pre-DC, bleach.

Post-DC, a steam cleaner. Don't use the concentrated jet nozzle though unless you want to have to re-grout.

thank you all very much for the tips. I'm actually quite excited about doing it now - I do love a project, sad git that i am
