I currently use fairy non bio but I’m feeling the need to change. What do you use/recommend. 2 adults/2 children. Lots of washing a week

Currently using Surf but do like the Persil Colour and Fibre care powder, always buy our laundry powder from Costco as a huge box lasts us for months (family of three) and works out super cheap.

DerelictWreck · 10/06/2018 18:27

Sainsbury's own non bio - the only one I've found which really gets things clean and isn't over perfumed so the clothes don't smell musty in the wardrobe after a while.

This always happened with big brands

dementedpixie · 10/06/2018 18:42

Powders contain bleaches (apart from the colour care ones) so they are better at keeping the drum clean and are better at getting stains out. Liquids don't contain bleaches and using them at low temperatures can lead to a build up of sludge in the machine. I use bio powder as the enzymes also help to get stains out.

Lidl bio powder. It’s much more effective than anything else I’ve used Smile

Which Best Buys here - top 3, all bio powders, pretty equal scores but Lidl much cheaper.

We use Fairy or Persil non-bio, anything else makes DP itch.

We tried soap nuts but found the colouring of the clothing went dull

e1y1 · 10/06/2018 20:25

Oh use a good few different ones (sad)

The best of the best is Ariel, second to that is Persil.

I also like Daz as this is the “cheap” version of Ariel.

Other big brands are ok, but I find the ones sold mainly on Scent (Bold or Surf) aren’t really geared up for cleaning as good as the others. Fairy of course is non bio, and as mentioned by PP, as lovely as it smells it won’t match bio.

In terms of store brands, most of them clean perfectly well, but I’m not convinced they look after clothing (fabric structure, anti bobbling etc) as the branded, this was further reinforced by something I saw on a documentary, the store brands tore the fibres to shreds (under a microscope).

Liquids are better for colours and are easier for pretreating, but I would never use these exclusively to all others as they don’t contain bleach and of course that wrecks your machine with mould.

MarsBarsAreShrinking · 10/06/2018 21:24

Do most people use the same brand all the time then? I just buy whatever is on offer at the time... am I the only one? Almost always the pods/capsules just for ease and no mess. Same with softener; I just buy whatever's on offer or cheapest that week!

dementedpixie · 10/06/2018 21:26

I am currently using bold 2in1 but also use persil, Ariel, daz, etc. Always use bio powder whatever I buy

SluttyButty · 10/06/2018 21:34

MarsBars we always buy what's on offer.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 10/06/2018 21:36

Whatever's on special offer. I'm experimenting with liquid as the repair man told me it causes less sludge than powder if you mostly use the quick wash. So far, the drawer is not sludgy (scrubbed before starting the experiment) but I can't comment on the insides of the machine. Tesco bio liquid and Comfort honeysuckle fabric conditioner at the moment.

e1y1 · 10/06/2018 21:39

I do Mars (but always change between the same 3 or so ones) and yes will always buy the one on offer as then I’m never forced to pay full price and at least one or two are always on offer at any given supermarket (shop at all except Asda).

But I never usually have just on detergent on the go (depends what I’m washing) so would pick one up whenever I see the “best” offer (the offer you can’t pass up so to speak, as some offers are better than others at different times etc)

Probably made myself sound like a loon but I hope that makes sense.

e1y1 · 10/06/2018 21:40

*one

Plumsmith · 10/06/2018 21:42

I either get Bold or Ariel liquid pod/capsules. We don’t have much storage space so these fit well under our sink and eliminate the need for powder and conditioner. I generally swap between the two when I run out the keep the scent new. No problems with them at all

RoseMartha · 10/06/2018 21:43

Persil non bio powder usually 45 washes on box but make it last for more than that and only buy on special offer .

Longdistance · 10/06/2018 21:46

Bold 2 in 1.

I also use ALDI or Lidl’s liquid detergent. Lidl’s Doussy fabric softeners (yellow one) smells beautiful 👌🏼

Kc1009 · 10/06/2018 21:52

Wow thank you for the which responses. Will give persil powder a go as I haven't got a Lidl near me at the moment x always wondered if it's worth paying for the which information

Persil liquid and Persil Biological, Ariel Bleach when needed, vanish bar for stains pre wash. Comfort fabric conditioner , but not on towels, face cloths and dishcloths.

KioraAdora · 10/06/2018 22:07

Daz powder. I only use a little bit, a huge box (reduced to £4) lasts months.
