Is there a rule about this? What does it mean if mince turns brown?! I haven't smelled it yet to check.

Would smell it, but prob. okay. Would use it today though.

EnidTheInvisible · 21/05/2007 11:19

it often goes brown

I think that is its natural colour tbh

give it a sniff, am sure its fine if it has been refridgerated

UCM · 21/05/2007 11:19

LOL I thought this said 'Mice gone brown' so had to look.

UCM · 21/05/2007 11:19

And yes, it should be ok, smell it, if it smells like dead mouse don't eat it.

Carmenere · 21/05/2007 11:20

Yes beef is supposed to go brown, the only reason it stays bright red is because they put special gas into the packaging to keep it more attractive looking. I'll bet it is fine but if it smells unappetising don't use it incase it was stored badly.

aardfark · 21/05/2007 11:20

I've had this and it smells bad - I took it back and was told the packaging had blown.

LIZS · 21/05/2007 11:20

As longa s it smells ok it shodul be fine, somehtign ot do with oxidsation iirc. Once heard that in butchers' shops they just re- minced it when it does that so the colour evens out.

ipanemagirl · 21/05/2007 11:23

Thank you all very much! I feel confident to sniff and cook or sniff and chuck (Hope I won't sniff, cook and then chuck.....)

I bought some from Sainsbury's last week, a day or two later when I pulled it out of the fridge (correctly stored, well in date) it was brown (being pg I didn't want to risk it). Anyway I called the customer care number on the front of the packaging and they sent me a voucher for a fiver!

ipanemagirl · 21/05/2007 11:26

I love when they do that.

Foxybrown - that's standard practice at Sainsburys these days - if you have a nectar card they give you double the value in points on it. I've had about £30s worth (legitimately) in the last year, I seem to buy every thing in the shop liable to die/rot/not work.

They will ask me to join their QA team soon, I'm sure

Does anyone else think organic meat smells meatier than non-organic?!

OP posts:
aardfark · 21/05/2007 18:53

I think if it's fresh it shouldn't smell at all TBH. The smell is the proteins in the flesh going off (sorry that's a horrid image).

AnnabelCaramel · 21/05/2007 18:55

It's because the blood has oxidized. So long as it smells ok it's fine.

ipanemagirl · 21/05/2007 19:37

well I cooked it and we all ate the pasta and avoided the meat, I don't think it was off exactly just 'on the turn' perhaps.. any way I've called and got the points back. Oh the drama of my life!
