Why is my house full of flies?

Those small flies, that fly fairly slowly and you bat away (or DH tries to splat) with your hands.

I've checked the bin doesn't need changing, that nothing's gone off in the fruit bowl etc.

Where are the little b*strds coming from???

Is there a dirty nappy laying anywhere?

Or have the kids dropped a piece of fruit somewhere and you've not noticed?

Have you left a light on in a room with a window slightly open?

cornsilk · 20/05/2007 22:23

We had those last year. Think it's to do with the weather. Haven't had them yet this year.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 20/05/2007 22:25

Sorry to be gruesome, but do you have a cat? Could there be a little mouse corpse lying around somewhere hidden?

(personal experience unfortunately)

newlifenewname · 20/05/2007 22:27

I take it you mean fruit flies?

Have you checked the fridge/cupboards you might keep potatoes in and suchlike?

We had a lot of these on Sat but I had NOT cleared out the fruit bowl and found four manky plums and a coconut that I'd forgotten about.

Aaah, actually I did chuck out a load of fruit earlier that looked a bit dodgy but it wasn't exactly fly-laden so I thought it might be innocent.

Can I pass on the welsh hymns though? Incidentally, which one? I'd be prepared to give it a try...

Is this a German problem them? We have this every summer, definately the fruit, esp. bananas.

I put up loads of those horrible sticky papers. Looks yukky with all the dead flies on it, but it was the only thing that worked.

mommajools · 20/05/2007 22:46

fruit flies? could be a houseplant they are coming from if you have any.

TricityBendix · 20/05/2007 22:47

So they're fruit flies? And those sticky paper things are for them? Hmm, will have to invest in some I think.

And stop eating fruit clearly.

Oh mommajules, x post - tell me more about the houseplants. Is it cos one could be rotting somewhere? (we've only got one - it was our wedding anniversary present to each other... Has needed repotting for years and now perhaps is decomposing...

Oh bugger. Don't tell me they're only in Wales and Germany. That's bizarre.

Loads in Brighton (well,in my sister's house anyway)

macmama73 · 20/05/2007 23:03

Think that it is more common here because of the weather, the fruit does go off quicker.

I keep the fruit in the fridge, that helps. And I have to keep the bread bag tightly shut and put it in the bread bin otherwise they get in there too.

Tortington · 20/05/2007 23:04

yourin brighton and kept it a secret?

moondog · 20/05/2007 23:05

Me?
No
Sister only.
(V nice place it is too)

Tortington · 20/05/2007 23:07

ok i'll let you off.

DimpledThighs · 20/05/2007 23:10

they love bananas and it is worse if you have a compost bin.

If you put bananas in the bin put lots of stuff on top of it and leave the bin open for a bit so natural predators can get to them.

If you don't have a compost bin my advice is bollox

TricityBendix · 21/05/2007 17:56

bollox DT.

They don't seem as bad today now I've got rid of the dodgy fruit.
