Anyone else moving, thinking of moving, hoping to move? We just had an offer accepted on a house, which is great, but now everything has to be sorted and decluttered and packed, plus the current house has to be cleaned etc etc...come celebrate/commiserate with me with your moving to-dos! I brought Cake!

We're not moving yet, but I need to do a major declutter. I started the konmari process a few years ago and did really well with it. The parts that I did thoroughly, I never relapsed on. But the parts that I did less thoroughly still need work.

To-do list:
Finish clearing out all my old teaching resources
Go through DCs clothes and pass on the stuff that doesn't fit

There are many, many more items on the to-do list but I'm hoping I can get these done this week.

What's on your list, OP?

JustAnotherManicMum · 03/06/2018 06:36

Also, congrats on the House!!

PhaetalError · 03/06/2018 09:24

Thanks Just!

ON ZE LIST:

  • get a surveyor booked
  • get all buying paperwork (Monday?) and sign and return
  • go through my clothes and bin grotty stuff/charity shop good stuff

DONE:
✅ get down boxes from last move
✅ sorted DC clothes to keep/bin/charity (great minds clearly!)

I did KonMari too! The clothes have stayed pretty well done, so shouldn’t take long to sort. DC has apparently had a growth spurt though, hence yesterday’s clearout. I also found a lot of random crap under the bed. The excitement.

What are the areas that didn’t keep so well for you? Clothes and books weren’t too bad for me, papers are OK (but need redoing every so often), komono is...patchy, but sentimental isn’t bad.

I think komono is just too big a category to think about all at once tbh.

Good luck with the teaching stuff! It does tend to multiply when you’re not looking, no?

I just moved house a week ago! Got rid of so much stuff, it felt great!

Cleaning the old house was the worst part for me. But I think we managed it okay!

DesertIslandPenguin · 03/06/2018 17:56

Hoping to move this year. I am going to get in touch with a mortgage broker this week and go from there.

I've been slowly declutterinv my stuff but no one else is remotely interested in paring down their junk. Just came home from a lovely relaxing weekend away and thought I'd get some laundry from DS's room to make up a load. OMG. I have an 11yo hoarder on my hands.

JustAnotherManicMum · 05/06/2018 06:03

desertisland I hear you! My Dh isn't particularly interested in paying down, and my DD wants to keep her old balloon animals that she got from a party that are all shriveled now. ARRRGGG

PhaetalError · 05/06/2018 07:07

I’m not looking forward to the cleaning mrs. We haven’t been here long but it’s an old house and despite our best efforts some bits got a bit mouldy in the winter.

You never know desert, my never threw away DH has come (slightly) around to my way of thinking! But unless it’s obviously rubbish I don’t throw his stuff out.

Where are you going to start with DS? Or are you just going to sort very obviously and exclaim over how wonderful you feel? Wink

(Shudder)
I don’t like balloons very much at all, just, you’re more tolerant than me having them in the house!

DS and I are going to work through his room together. We did three small piles of comics last night and he got rid of most of them. It's going to take ages as I don't want to overwhelm him or make him resent it, but he can't keep everything!! He said it was much easier to decide what to keep with me helping.

DownUdderer · 05/06/2018 11:28

I’ll lurk a little bit! We’re just waiting (impatiently) for our mortgage to get pre-approved, dh has emailed more info across this evening, and we’ve found a house we want to put an offer on. So I know I need to get cracking with packing! I need to get some boxes, that can be my first job:)

CantStandMeow · 05/06/2018 13:29

I'd like to join please! Offer accepted 14/05, mortgage approved and survey completed last week. So moving forward (fingers crossed etc).

Decluttered the DC room and clothes already.

Need to do desk/papers etc when they're asleep or the preschooler will draw all over them!

So much to do but I'm not sure where to start on the rest. I have the KonMarie book but didn't do all the sections.

Trying to find the balance between not paying to move stuff unnecessarily and throwing out stuff we'll need in the new place.

First time buyers so any tips are appreciated.

PhaetalError · 05/06/2018 19:12

Good going desert! My MIL always says it’s easier to give/throw away when someone else helps.

And welcome down and cant! I have no tips for first time buying. This is my second shot but it’s really different now. Loads more paperwork!

I have booked the surveyor, huzzah!

Slightly concerned that seller may turn out to be a CF, but I’m being very firm and hoping for the best.

I should also go to Morrison’s and get some more boxes, thinking about it...

Also pay solicitors their blood money. Sigh.

I'm really interested in this but can I ask...? How did you all get through showing your houses for sale? It's taking me ages just to get ready for that as there are so many jobs I want to do first.

PhaetalError · 09/06/2018 06:42

I didn’t, I left it to the estate agents to be honest. Good luck with it all! What sort of stuff do you want to do before the viewings start?
