Recently moved house and no longer have an airing cupboard but have managed to use an enclosed cupboard instead. The only problem is it’s starting to smell a bit damp and am after any suggestions what I could use that’s pretty natural (thinking something essential oils or laundry spray?) I could use to keep it smelling fresh. Thanks

Lavender oil is the obvious one, I suppose

If it's starting to smell a bit damp are you making sure stuff is bone dry when it goes in and that there isn't mould/condensation build up in the cupboard? Maybe have a very well sealed cupboard and when it gets warm it's getting all humid?

If I were you I'd take everything out, give it a good scrub and put some sort of dehumidifier thingy in there (like one of those gel pots or a big open tub of bicarb), that should stop any weird smells building up.

Then you can put whatever scents in you like. Scented drawer liners from t k maxx are pretty good if you want to line the shelves of your cupboard. Or you could hang up a pouch of those little wood balls (I think they're a moth deterrent?) and let whatever essential oils you want absorb into the wood when they start losing their scent.

Cedar, that is, that might be another oil to try.

We've just changed our central heating to a combi so no longer have a whopping thermal store in the airing cupboard, so I'm wanting to avoid similar issues myself. First step yesterday DH gave it a good clean and then a coat of bathroom paint, which is supposed to be anti mould. Ours is huge so we're moving the slatted shelves to the back and then having a heated airer standing in front ( thiss* with half open by default so we can access the shelves ) . Do you have a decent source of heat in your cupboard?

You’re in a similar position to me OP so I’m watching with interest. Only I haven’t braved the airing cupboard in our house and all the towels are currently stacked in a spare wardrobe.

We have an enclosed cupboard too so I leave things out and folded on an airing rack to make sure they are dry before putting away.

I have an enclosed cupboard. I drilled holes in the shelves for circulation, put a vent at the bottom of the door and fitted a greenhouse heater at the bottom of the cupboard for low level cheap heat.

Its no where near warm like my mums boiler cupboard but its never damp.

nice bars of soap.

Put some charcoal briquettes in a little tray and they'll absorb moisture and smells.
