Smelly Patio! How to disinfect?

Basically the patio stinks! It's right between my kitchen and next doors kitchen and it's attracting flies and is just generally unpleasant. I think it's mostly due to my dogs pee but also we had leaky gutters for ages which meant the patio got soaked constantly and as it never gets the sun it doesn't try so is constantly growing moss and just generally gunky and horrible. This is my first year in this house (rented) so it's a new problem to me.

I tried hosing it down but because it's so gross it all just started spraying everywhere (the dirt) and it didn't seem to help. Ive swept it a million times. I've chucked my mop water over it today with zoflora in which seems to have helped but realistically it's a drop in the ocean and there must be an easier way that making 10+ buckets of hot water with zoflora.

Am I being thick? We had decking and fake grass in the last house and it was all great all year round and totally maintenance free.

You need Jeyes Fluid. It's an outdoor disinfect. It stinks to high heaven but does a great job. The sell it in my local tesco.

The moss needs to be killed with bleach or Jeyes Fluid. Leave it down for at least 30 mins then scrub with a stiff brush. It will need doing a couple of times every year.

Ok fab. What do I do with it? Do I just pour it directly onto patio or need to dilute?

Think you dilute, but watch out re your dogs as it is toxic to them. White vinegar is safer (but you need a lot!)

I just use a pressure washer to clean mine. No disinfectant. I do have to hose down the whole area afterwards as there is dirt everywhere!

Jeyes fluid is safe to use in areas with dogs, but not cats or aquatic wildlife. I use it in the dog garden, but I had drains put in so it doesn’t run off the yard to areas where cats may touch it and I rinse it very thoroughly with a hose. I put it down during the day, so it is dry by night or wash it in the rain, so it is being rinsed as I wash. Buckets of water are no good. Cats are attracted to the smell, but they can die an horrific death, if they ingest it.

Another option is none bio washing powder, as it neutralises urine and is none toxic. I use that for washing floors and sometimes the yard.

Thanks. In Tesco now. Guessing bleach isn't good for dogs either. I don't have cats. Neighbours do but they don't come near my patio

Definitely Jeyes fluid!

gryffen · 26/05/2018 17:37

Jeyes fluid and maybe washing with strong Milton daily if dog are out

LightAsTheBreeze · 26/05/2018 17:42

Might be worth getting some Patio Magic to kill the moss if the Jeyes fluid doesn't work on the moss, Jeyes will disinfect it though

I use Patio Magic each Spring and it really keeps the moss down

Right so went to Tesco to have a look. Jeyes fluid is £9 for a small bottle. Where as a huge bottle of thin bleach is 35p. And pine disinfectant is also 35p for a large bottle. Could either of these options be ok? I can do it on a day the dogs are not there - they are staying at the boarders Friday night as we are at a wedding on Saturday. And could rinse well? The pine one just says not to let them walk on it when it's wet or lick it....

Try the bleach. I use it regularly on my outside steps when they get slippy. It does work. Incidentally, today I was in Toolstation and I noticed it is very reasonably priced, and they have patio cleaner in 4 litre containers for about £7 that says it clears moss.
