try www.helpIammoving.co.uk (although liz's list is just as good )

Remember to organise parking for the removal lorry if necessary (we had to apply 4 days before move to suspend the parking spaces in front of our house for the lorry to fit in).

Ring your utilities providers, tell them you are moving and get the free phone number from them - you ring with the meter reading on the day of the move.

Remember to pack a box with kettle, cups, teabags, milk (champagne), toilet roll, soap, towel..ready for new house. (Last time we moved the moment we got through the front door one of the removal man asked for toilet roll, soap and towel )

I really should be reading this thread. Exchanging contracts at the moment so not sure how long it will all take. DH away till August so have to move myself and DS 10 months.

looneytune · 20/05/2007 16:39

Hiya mate, as you know we moved at the beginning of November and STILL haven't done all the change of addresses

Deffo, deffo, sort your crap out!!! I'm sure I've told you loads that I LOVE Freecycle!!! Never heard of it until we were moving and it was just the best thing ever!!! It was still a massive amount to move and well, I can't imagine what it would have been like without getting rid of the stuff we did!!!!

And make sure dp sorts of the broadband ASAP - who am I going to talk to without you always there on MSN????

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited for you!!!!! xxx

I feel stressed today, it doesnt help dd1 has been got a project to do to hand in on the 4th june (we get the keys on the 6th) and we've got half term week when i will have 4-6 children in the house so can't pack downstairs up because have to keep it normal for business - have nowhere we can keep packed boxes!

Dd1 is due to go away sat night to monday with my mum, I've had to tell her if she hasn't finished her project by then she can't go - she is almost 8 and has no motivation to do the project which is why we havent started it, at least now she is saying she will get it done so she can go!

Project is to build a model of a viking ship!

No spare bedding (always wash and put straight back on - we are very poor!)

Attic only just done that because we had it insulated not long ago so we're keeping pretty much everything up there.

I use dd's room for childminding so can't touch in there plus we'll be keeping everything in there as even stuff dd wont use dd2 can or childminding will.

our room I guess i can sort out the bedside draws, i've already done the wardrobe and we've sorted the shed but do need to do kitchen draws and cuboards.

Because we have such a small house I have to keep on top of the clutter, luckily we sorted most of it at the start of the year.

Have you booked your removal firm yet or are you not bothering with one?

Ebay are good for boxes and wrapping. But call your local supermarkets and ask them if they can put some to one side for you. Also the smaller more local shops are good too.

Get a folder to one side and pull out all your house hold things like your bill, council tax etc. Call them one by one and write a little note on top with the todays date and whether you cancelled them or swapped/notified them of new addy etc. Some places will tell you to call back nearer the move day like your home insurance but you should get the majority done which will be a big job out the way.

As for packing and storing, start with things your know you wont use and that you can get away with not using. So books, dvds, cds, videos, ornaments etc.
It'll be a case of just having to live round the boxes for a little while. Annoying yes but well worth it in the end because you wont be stressing that you've left everything to last minute.

I would also recommend you get paper plates, plastic cutlery and cups for the last few days so you can pack your crockery in time and have no washing to faff with.

Oh yes you need a box to keep with you in your car or something.

Stick in kettle, dilute juice, biscuits, your file with your bill stuff in so that you can call electric board etc and get everything switched on.

I also stuck the bedding in a black bag in the car so I could make the beds as soon as we got there and we could just flop out that night.

LoveMyGirls · 21/05/2007 08:31

No we can't afford a removal firm plus they would laugh at us as we're only moving over the road! we're going to use my car (7 seater) and my brothers work van.

I can't work round boxes - not cause its annoying (though it would be) but because there is honestly no room for boxes and I work from home childminding.

We have arrqanged with the local shop for us to have all thier boxes.

Plastic plates etc is a fab idea, thanks for that!

Nbg · 21/05/2007 09:22

Ahhh the boxes will be a no no then!

Great that you have the local shop helping out.
