Lovely fluffy towels?

Right, obviously I need to get out more, but am having a boring day of housework & laundry drudgery & this is niggling me...

Why oh why do my nice new towels go flat & cardboardy after a few washes?

Do any MN domestic goddesses have any tips for keeping them nice & fluffsome?

I haven't got a tumble drier, BTW, & fabric conditioner doesn't seem to make much difference (or am I using the wrong one? Is there a well kept fabric conditioner secret that I don't know about?)

Oh no, am I stuck with cardboard towels unless I get a tumble drier then?

Anyone else?

I have heard that if you add white vinigar to the rince cycle it removes any build up on the towel making it softer.
Not tried it myself as I tumble mine.

Thanks Ivor. That's just the kind of top old fashioned tip I was hoping for. Does it not make them stinky though?

Shouldn't make them stinky - white vinegar, not malt. Just put it in instead of the fabric conditioner.

i tried it after hearing it from a mnetter whose mum swore by it or something...and it didn't work for my towels.

If all fails perhaps we could swap husbands as mine likes his towels crinkly and moans no end if they're too soft!

Not using conditioner is a myth. If you use it, they will be fluffy. Hang them out too.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 18/05/2007 23:06

Babygrand, it's a deal. I have a cupboard full of brittle, sandpapery (but VG quality!)Habitat white towels that he's welcome to...

But when I hang them outside they are still horrid

I can't believe I''m sitting here talking about towel softness at 11pm on a Friday night. How times change!

Am very grateful for your suggestions tho

No should NOT use fabric softener with towels.

more expensive ones even write it on the label... because it cost the fibres in an oily substance so that they wont be absorbant.... cause thats how softern works, by using oily petrochemicals (hence i refsue to use the stuff at all..... YUK

anyway if you have a high washing line where they hang in a strong wind they will dry softern... the problame is when they are to still.

If you have a really high washing line and a windy day that towels will be much softer...

tumble drying them is the REAL way to keep them extra nice though!
