Buying a new washing machine WWYD

Hello

We’re looking to buy a really good reliable and efficient washing machine that is quiet during use and will last us a good few years.

We’re lucky to have a good budget for one and I think Miele are the way to go but my other half has been considering Siemens and Samsung.

What are your thoughts? Tell me what’s the best washing machine you’ve had and what you’d recommend.

My Miele is over 14 years old and has never missed a beat.

It was a basic model, iirc the cheapest at the time that had the honeycomb drum. I paid £500 but I think the cheapest these days are around £600 ish.

Sometimes John Lewis offer an extended warranty or look at Marks Electrical.

Either Miele, or hedge your bets with a cheaper machine with the longest guarantee you can find (try John Lewis). Where you do not want to waste money is on a top of the range one from a cheap brand with low build quality and poor aftersales. Better a bottom of the range one from a good brand (don’t pay for features and programmes you won’t use).

Ebac!

British made, brushless motors (I can't hear mine on a 1600 spin even with the kitchen door pulled across not shut) and ours came with a 10yr parts and labour guarantee!

I think the lower models come with 5yrs.

Far superior to my previous Samsung and sooooo much quieter than MILs Miele!

I've got a Samsung, it's being repaired tomorrow after only having it a few months. I wouldn't bother Angry

DramaAlpaca · 22/05/2018 20:31

I have a Siemens which has been going strong for 14 years. All I've had to do is replace the brushes twice when they've worn down, which is an easy DIY job.

I always go for a basic model of a good brand with a reputation for reliability like Miele, Siemens or Bosch. There's fewer bells & whistles to go wrong on a basic one.

MayFayner · 22/05/2018 20:35

I recently got a new one, a Bosch. It's good.

I planned on a Miele but the doors only open one direction which doesn't suit my utility.

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 22/05/2018 21:06

I have two Bosch's, one is over 10 years old (seasonal use) with no trouble at all. The other gets a much harder life but is well over 6 years and fab.

The only thing I miss is a 50 degree setting.

Got talked through the top of the range Miele but all the time I was justifying paying £££££££ for things I wouldn't use.

My Bosch home here is next to DS's bedroom, it's quiet running and spinning but it beeps on completion which he does hear more than the running noise.

What I love most about my Miele is that I can open the door and lob in stray socks after it has started and it opens as soon as it's finished.
It's been going 11 years so far with no problems

Daisy2315 · 29/05/2018 00:52

Well we brought a Samsung last week and it is awful. Waiting for them to come out to give a returns code. It smells musty and it is also very noisy on the spin and bangs around even after being levelled many times.

e1y1 · 29/05/2018 01:27

Steer absolutely clear of Samsung.

Had 2,, first topof the range £1000 12kg, colour screen yada yada, from brand new to completely and utterly dead in 7 months. 6 engineer visits and a MASSIVE fight with a Samsung, got money back.

Was then stupid enough to get another, £600 one, so a step down, that’s just had the inverter motor and PCB replaced 2 years in, this was after reporting a fault with heavy vibrating 2 weeks in, but AO wouldn’t budge. It is now sat disconnected whilst I decide what to do with it. “Samsung” engineer (they don’t have their own engineers) said there is a well known issue with inverter motor.

Saying that, I’m really not a fan of Miele stuff either, they’re not that good for the money and when they do go wrong Miele customer care refuses to believe it and parts cost £££££.

I’ve ALWAYS had flawless washing machines from Bosch, but I believe it is very model specific - ie the higher range models, I think they’re done on “series” now and you’re only supposed to go from series 4 upwards.

CharlieBoo · 02/06/2018 22:44

My first Bosch went for 13 years.. I’ve had the second Bosch 4 years so far and no probs

CloudCaptain · 02/06/2018 22:48

Loved my Samsung ecobubble but just had to have the motor? replaced after 2years use. I would also steer well clear of hotpot. DM went through several in a year and swore off them.

FreeButtonBee · 02/06/2018 22:53

I’ve had 10 years out of my Miele washing machine. Had one repair which cost £100 in that time and still going strong. I do notice that the spin isn’t as good as on more modern machines but I can’t justify replacing it yet as it still washes like a dream and has a 90 degree setting which is awarding for cleaning it out and the occasional white bedding wash. I have three children under 6 so it’s had a hard life for the past six years.

chickenchip · 02/06/2018 22:54

Coop has some good deals on Miele's- hotukdeals also had a discount code so it's worth a look

MsHomeSlice · 02/06/2018 22:56

I have given up on brand loyalty. I decide what features I want in white goods go on a few sites, get a few "suspects" lined up, check prices and reviews and choose from there.

Latest machine is a Hisense....It has been going non stop more or less since I bought it, it is capacious, quiet and so far has only needed the fluff filter emptied once!! I have had it ages too!
It was on offer at AO and I would recommend it to anyone!

halesie · 02/06/2018 23:04

Our Miele is great and has lasted almost a decade already but we got one with a powerful motor and it's not quiet!

Miele do extended 10 year warranty offers from time to time so look out for those if you decide to get one.

JellySlice · 02/06/2018 23:06

My Miele washer-drier and dishwasher have been going strong for 12y now. Can't fault Miele as a make (DM won't buy any other make of vacuum cleaner, either).

I agree that, if budget is a consideration with white goods, far better to get bottom of the range from the best (eg Miele or Bosch) than top of the range from a less-reliable make. Which publish reliability tables for white goods.
