PEE ON THE SOFA!

Help please!

DS is currently potty training and I've left him on his own whilst I nipped to the loo myself and he's managed to pee on the fabric sofa!

When we bought them we were advised that they should only be professionally cleaned and to not use other products on them but I really can't afford a professional cleaning at the moment Sad
I've tried to clean a stain off one of the cushions in the past and it didn't really work but we've had them cleaned since and it all came out.

I'm mortified. Is there anything I can do/try on my own especially to avoid the smell lingering? I can take the cushion cover off but have no clue where to go from there as it says "dry clean only" on the label.
My washing machine lets me select temperatures and it says that it also has a special wool setting so I'm guessing that would be quite delicate.

Anyone with any tips or experience? BlushBlushBlushBlush

Try the vanish carpet and upholstery cleaner, the foam one. I've always found that works. Then get it out in the garden to dry off.
We had a rather large toddler wee incident a couple of weeks ago.

Get yourself some of the bed pads or puppy pads and put them on the sofa with a blanket or towel over the top. That saves any other accidents.

I can't nip out and get anything right now and I need to tackle it ASAP. I have no vanish in Sad

I only have the one you put in the washing machine.

What is the fabric? Warm soapy water followed by baking soda left on and the vacuumed up will deal with the smell aspect but I guess it depends on fabric.

I wouldn't panic too much as little people wee doesn't smell strong or stain (I have 4 little peeps). Wash it with warm soapy water and dry it quickly to avoid water marks. If it does have a slight smell after washing then spray some Febreze on it.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 17/05/2018 11:33

I'm having the same issue today, but I don't pay attention to labels so covers are in the wash. Cushions been sprayed til dripping with flash febreeze, currently sitting out on the patio chairs

You may get away with washing in the machine, but you can’t do just one, you will have to do the entire sofa(s) as if it does fade then at least it will be even.

I wouldn’t recommend it though.

Unless EXPRESSLY stated, the fact the covers have a zip to allow removal are not to allow them to be cleaned, but rather to allow the foam/padding inside to be changed if it gets worn/flat (or indeed peed/spilt on to a point it needs replaced).

Your best option is to surface clean. Biological laundry detergent mixed in a solution of warm water and cleaned with a cloth is going to be your best option, biological contains enzymes (designed to “digest” stains, especially bodily ones - protein) once you have cleaned a light spray of white vinegar (or if in a real pinch brown vinegar IF the colour wouldn’t be affected by brown) as vinegar is a real good deodoriser. If no vingear, bicarbonate of soda will do, but you’ll need to wait for it to dry before applying of course.

The sofas are a dark beigey colour with a bit of brown/straw colour if you look closely you can see the stain because it's gone dark especially around the edges.

My washing machine has a special wool setting so I might risk it on a really low temp...

I think the padding I will just febreeze or dettol the whole thing and let it dry outside.
Gonna ask DP first as he used to sell sofas in his other life.

Febreeze has masked a multitude of whiffy aromas in our house !

SprinkleOfInsanity · 17/05/2018 23:35

Zoflora.

Biozet washing powder neutralises wee smells. Google taught me this and I can vouch for it - a cat weeed on a sofa that was outside while I was painting a room.

Monty27 · 18/05/2018 04:47

Do not wash any parts of fabric sofa. If you do the water will stain it further.
Bicarbonate will sort any whiff. Brush it in and vacuum.

Lilostitch · 18/05/2018 04:59

Bicarbonate of soda, lots, rubbed on the stain and then spray vinegar until its damp. Leave minimum 2 hours then vacuum.

Laurel543 · 18/05/2018 05:59

Not sure about the covers but if alt has gone into the cushions/pads themselves then I’d recommend getting some urine neutraliser.
Eg Rug Doctor Urine Eliminator (can get on amazon)
It does not have to be applied straight away and really works to prevent any smells longer term.

PenelopeFlintstone · 18/05/2018 12:45

The sofa I used it on didn't have removeable covers. I just sprayed a bit of it on.

evergreen7 · 18/05/2018 16:33

Thanks for all the replies!

I ended up taking the cover off and putting it in at 30C on a Wool wash setting and it came out in one piece!
The obvious wee stains are gone and there's no smell.

I also took the cushion/padding outside and gave it a really good spray of the fabric febreeze on both sides and let it dry.
I've popped the cover back on slightly damp but it's nearly good as new Grin
