Plant for bathroom that is indestructible?

Not plastic but what can I get that I won’t kill? I like succulents but what will like sun and steam?

Cactus possibly, or a fern?

Aridane · 15/05/2018 22:23

Ferns NEVER survive

Aridane · 15/05/2018 22:24

Succulents probably OK

clinger · 15/05/2018 22:25

Aloe Vera, just looked it up.Smile

Does your bathroom window have plain glass or is it patterned/opaque, thus filtering the sunlight? Does your bathroom tend to be hot (for example with a heated towel rail) and is it only humid when somebody takes a shower?
I have a Mother-in-laws-tongue in my hot, sunny and sometimes humid kitchen and that seems to be quite happy. Also a Christmas cactus and a Hoya carnosa (wax flower) might do well there. Spider plants are very easy and like a bright position, and would probably be ok if your glass if translucent rather than plain. But if I were you, I'd be tempted to try something a bit more exotic in these conditions. I've seen some small, reasonably priced Bougainvillea plants in my local garden centre recently and I think I'd try that in a bright bathroom.

I have an aloe Vera that gets very little attention. Maybe watered once a fortnight.
Does. Not. Die.

wowfudge · 15/05/2018 23:08

Succulents don't like moist air. A spider plant will be fine - forgiving if you forget to water it.

Runsandreads · 16/05/2018 14:04

I have a mother-in-law's tongue plant in my bathroom (downstairs loo so not warm and moist, actually quite cold) and it's doing okay - you might say it's thriving on neglect! Apparently these are pretty indestructible. Previously I'd had a succulent in there but it died pretty quickly due to cold, I think.

I have orchids in the sunny windowsill of my bathroom and they're doing well - they've reflowered several times.

Peace lilies are low maintenance too.

MessySurfaces · 16/05/2018 21:14

I was going to say peace lily, unless it's sunny (mine is still sulking from being moved onto a windowsill out of a corner with no indirect light...)

corcaithecat · 16/05/2018 21:32

I have spider plants and a couple of varieties of tradescantia in my bathrooms. In the downstairs loo, I've got geraniums flowering nicely.

Very bright and warm bordering on hot in summer, full light and through opaque glass so a little bit filtered. Thanks for all the replies. What do we reckon based on this?

Aloe Vera might be good reading back. No idea what mother in law tongue looks like- will check

Crassula Ovata (money plants) thrive on neglect. I have one in my bathroom that I didn't water for about 4 months. It's still alive.

MissWilmottsGhost · 18/05/2018 07:40

Had aloes in my bathroom for years. They seemed happy enough with almost total neglect. There are loads of different types of aloes, my aloe Vera got too big for the windowsill so I put a different variety (A. Aristata) there instead. It is much smaller, like a little rosette, and gets orange flowers every year.

Polpette · 18/05/2018 07:54

Aloe Vera, Mother in Laws Tongue and Devil's Ivy are indestructible and thrive in bathrooms.

Middleoftheroad · 18/05/2018 07:58

I kill all plants yet have failed to kill.the winter cactus (i think thats what the green thing with pink flowers is called) that's sat in my bathroom for 10 yrs!

Also, we were given an Aloe Vera that is immune to my dislike of anything green and refuses to die
despite minimal watering.

Cool. Thanks all
