How do you dispose of hair?

JellySlice · 14/05/2018 07:17

Short hair from shaving, long hair from the hairbrush or the vacuum cleaner beaters, yucky hair from the plughole, etc.

Is it OK to flush? What about leaving it out for birds?

Just put it in the bin.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2018 07:19

Bin.

Astrid2 · 14/05/2018 07:26

If I'm near a toilet when I have some to dispose of I flush it. If I'm near a bin I bin it. Wouldn't have thought to do anything else!

mommybear1 · 14/05/2018 10:46

Bin

PiggeryPorcombe · 14/05/2018 10:47

Bin. I’ll never forget the embarrassment I felt when we had our bathroom replaced and the old bath and pipes etc were all sat in the skip on our drive with literally yards and yards of my hair trailing out of them Blush

SlowlyShrinking · 14/05/2018 10:53

I leave it out in the garden for the birds to make nests out of

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 10:54

Compost bin.

DorothyGarrod · 14/05/2018 11:33

What Slowly says. I don't normally see it again.

Piggery, that would be me!

Davros · 14/05/2018 17:52

Don't flush it. I put it in the bin but now I'm going to put it out for the birds, what a sweet idea

GrasswillbeGreener · 15/05/2018 08:41

I cut my children's hair myself; from about February up till early summer the clippings go out in the garden for the birds and definitely get collected. I haven't usually tried putting out hairbrush hair for that. Bin or compost probably for the rest.

Does anyone know the best way to trap hair in showers / baths? We need to redo our bathroom anyway and when we do I must put hair traps of some sort in - husband loses a lot of body hair and son is heading the same way, and any long hairs from my add to that to block the pipes :(

FairfaxAikman · 15/05/2018 08:59

Don't put long hair out for the birds, it can wind round their legs and cig off the circulation.

FairfaxAikman · 15/05/2018 08:59

*cut

Knit into pants

Vitalogy · 15/05/2018 09:47

Contents of vacuum in garden bin.

Ariela · 15/05/2018 11:17

Bin or in winter use to aid firelighting instead of dry holly leaves, usually lights well and quickly spreads to paper/small twigs.

paddypants13 · 15/05/2018 12:49

I put human hair and vacuum contents in the bin but I leave the cat hair from brushing her in the garden for the birds.

MikeUniformMike · 15/05/2018 14:52

The only thing you should put in the loo are pee, poo and paper. Unless you wipe your bum with or poo hair, put it in the bin. It ends up in fatbergs.
You can get basin and shower plughole covers that look a bit like tea strainers.

JellySlice · 15/05/2018 17:46

Long hair can harm birds? I never thought of that. I have wondered whether it can contribute to blocking drains.

When flushed, I mean. We always use a dossil in the shower.

JellySlice · 15/05/2018 17:51

@GrasswillbeGreener If possible, get a shower tray where the plug is slightly recessed, like in a basin, and not flush with the porcelain. We have a 'flush' one, and it's a pain to keep hair-free. The only thing we can use is a dossil, but as that stands proud of the tray it slows down the draining and hair still gets under it. I haven't found anything else that fits and doesn't get knocked off the drain.
