Tap limescale

Hello!
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use to get rid of the limescale from around taps? Just moved in and brute scrubbing isn't working.
Thank you!

Viakal

franke · 13/05/2018 09:03

Yes, viakal and very carefully chip off the crusty bits with a flat head screwdriver.

Squirt on neat viakal and leave on for about 15 mins. Then scrub with a washing up sponge scourer. We leave in an extremely hard water area and I’m always having to deal with this.

Kilrock from Wilko or B&M, it's a thick gel that you paint on with a brush so it doesn't run off.

Make a paste of bi carb and white vinegar, put it in the tap and cover with cling film. Leave for an hour or so and wash off.
Be careful about chipping any off, taps are often chrome coated over brass. If you chip the chrome off you’ll be left with brass showing through.

White vinegar in a food bag tied to the tap with an elastic band. As another poster has said you need to be careful if the tap is chrome plated, might be worth keeping a check if you use this method I usually leave it in overnight but if it's chrome plated overnight is too long. Good luck!

Another vote for white vinegar... I've recently discovered this and it's marvellous for limescale.

chloechloe · 13/05/2018 12:52

Gah! How has the old house owner managed to live with that!?!?

Yes, fill a freezer or sandwich bag with neat white vinegar, tie it on and leave it to do the hard work for you.

chloechloe · 13/05/2018 12:54

Another thing: give how bad it is you might need to replace the vinegar every few hours.

Viakal... Spray from the bottle, use a hard toothbrush if required

yumscrumfatbum · 14/05/2018 20:40

It's easier if you are able to take the tap off. That way you can give it a proper soak

hampsteadholly · 14/05/2018 20:45

I have an old knife (cutlery one not a bread knife!) I use to get rid of this on mine as the water is so hard where I live it builds up all the time. No need for any products just chip it off with the knife. It just comes away really easily no work required. It doesn't leave any marks on the tap and I find it really satisfying Smile

SheStoodInTheStorm · 15/05/2018 07:33

Thanks all!
Is Viakal available from the supermarket?
Need to get some white vinegar in too.

Bar keepers friend. I swear by it.

Angie169 · 15/05/2018 07:42

With your taps do bad you should get someone to look at your pipes too. Esp central heating one's, they are likely to be really bad too.
