KonMari - any tips for a beginner?

I downloaded the app. Found a good checklist of sub-categories online.

I even currently have a temporarily empty room I can use as an HQ (this is what has finally inspired me to give it a go as otherwise I would just take everything out of my cupboards and have to step round it for weeks while it lay on the floor).

Any tips before I get started?

Just do it, and trust what she says about not having to buy more storage boxes.

Don't tell people who you know won't agree with what you're doing, you want to avoid the 'no, aunt Sally gave you that, you can't get rid of it' type of conversations.

Don't get too hung up about selling everything, be realistic about the time and faff involved on putting everything on eBay and send it to the charity shop instead. Sell the big stuff that you'll actually get good money for.

I think it works because you get the stuff out of the house and gone, you don't second guess yourself.

There have been no regrets for me over anything that I got rid of on MK, unlike other methods!

When you do the paperwork have wine, especially if there are old letters and cards, I found it surprisingly emotional

Stick to the order she gives in terms of dragging it all out, holding it, putting back what sparks joy...but keep a charity shop bag/box handy for random crap. So even if you’re still on socks, if you suddenly think, ‘actually I bloody hate that vase’ you can just stick it in the give away box regardless.

Also, take pictures! (And share them with us!)

Just do it.

Really ask if the item sparks joy. Don't keep anything that you only kind of like.

I haven't regretted anything I've thrown, even though we're about to move to a much bigger flat. I love opening my wardrobe and not seeing clothes that make me feel bad for whatever reason (too small/waste of money/wrong style)

I’ve never been able to go the full hog, but I do use the ‘does this spark joy’ and it makes a lot of difference. Also the folding things properly for drawers seems mental but it’s a revelation. Still trying to teach DP to fold properly though.
