Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

Hope you had a great birthday Cider! I too ate far too much yesterday and so had some very bizarre dreams Confused

Didn't do a massive amount, although did get to drs for meds review, and asked about the snip for DH thus potentially decluttering several million sperm I HATE drs, so this was an achievement.

Few more bits in ragbag, another black bag of rubbish out, recycling out... Good luck today everyone Smile

BuffysFavouriteStake · 16/05/2018 11:02

Forgot to mention also got weighed at docs for the first time in years.

Looks like I have 4 stone to declutter as well. Sigh.

StealthNinjaMum · 16/05/2018 16:49

Ihateyourcarpet your bedroom sounds a lot like mine. All kinds of random stuff.

SandandSea I would keep the swimming certificates with other important certificates and remove the frame, it's not like they take up much space. I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago but I recently bought a fire proof lockable box which I am intending to put in the loft. It probably has enough space to put in a ream of a4 paper and I'm intending to keep passports there and important certificates (marriage, birth) and I found my degree, A level and GCSE certificates the other day so they're going in there - even though we now know that GCSEs only last 5 years.

Belated happy birthday cider

I haven't been on mumsnet for a couple of days because I had a social life - it doesn't happen very often! However I have been doing a small amount of decluttering.

Yesterday I donated a bag of clothes to a charity shop and sold a book for £1. Today I found a small packet of postit notes in my trouser pockets that had accidentally gone in the washing and got destroyed.

Buffysfavouritestake I know it's hard to declutter weight but I once lost 5 stone when I joined a mumsnet dieting thread. I think the biggest thing is understanding what's caused you to put the weight on and working out a diet that you can realistically stick to and then perhaps finding a group of people who can support you. I loved mumsnet threads because - just like with this decluttering thread - in real life I didn't want to bore people with my diet obsession or admit how bad I felt about my weight. The weight has started to creep back on so I need to follow my own advice and maybe lose 2 stone.

Sorted through ‘the junk draw’ today and threw so much small crappy stuff out (party bag shit etc).
Very satisfying!!

lljkk · 16/05/2018 19:33

I am dead jealous of you lot!!!

I will get back on track, I will get back on track, I will...

IHateYourCarpet · 16/05/2018 23:05

One beanbag made! Used up tons of odds and ends of thread, about five half spools in total.

Bed arrived today. DH still coping a strop over disposing of the old one Hmm and has made an absolute tip of the Spare room again. To the point where the bloke couldn't actually get it in there, so it's currently living in the bathroom.

No coil for me! The clinic doesn't fit them either, so they've referred me to the hospital ... in three months time. So I should work through my new pad stash I guess. Not going to lie, incredibly annoyed that I'll have 3-6 periods in that time. It buggers up a lot of events where I could really do with not having a period!

Bought DS some 6-9 and 9-12 month clothes. And a candle to replace my old one.

Other than that, not done much today. DH is away tomorrow, so I'll be decluttering odd bits of freezer food.

Gibble1 · 16/05/2018 23:21

I’ve not got rid of anything today. Someone at work had a pop at me about clearing stuff. Essentially she likes the clutter and to stay off her turf. Will have to escalate it to our manager as I’m the fire warden so am legally responsible if a fire was to kill someone. Le sigh.

NaMajesty · 17/05/2018 00:08

Buffy I am on one of the weight loss threads on here and they do help massively, you're welcome to join Smile

DS decluttered my favourite mug by purposely throwing it on the kitchen floor. Fecking terrible twos here we come. I will declutter him on eBay if he carry's on Smile bloody bastard child

A cup, and tub with a lid have been chucked out too (from the baby plate/cutlery cupboard - they were odd and didn't match anything else so had to go)

StealthNinjaMum · 17/05/2018 07:46

Well done Ihateyourcarpet for being strong, your dh sounds like a nightmare, has he deliberately made the spare room unusable? It's just like a toddler tantrum isn't it? can't talk as dd1 sleeps in my childhood bed and its not going anywhere In a few weeks it'll be sorted and organised and dh will forget about it

The car is being serviced today so I have just cleared it out. A bag of old food packets and drinks bottles was there plus loads of other stuff which needs to be put away in the house. I found a single red shoe. Think I remember finding its pair somewhere else months ago. Wonder if they'll ever together again.

OP posts:
IHateYourCarpet · 17/05/2018 08:32

Honestly Stealth I don't think it's deliberate. He's just so naturally messy! It drives me crazy.

Box of bits to eBay/gumtree today. Loads of parcels to take to the post office too.

CiderwithBuda · 17/05/2018 09:05

I have five sone to declutter. Sigh. Have been on loads on weight loss threads on here over the years. DH says my problem is that I don’t stick to any one approach. He’s right. I panic. Different diets swirl around in my head. It’s exhausting. Currently reading both Lisa Reilly’s Honesty diet book AND a book called Lean Habits while a member of Rebelfit on FB. And wondering if I should try the low carb Bootcamp on here or give WW a try again. Oh and I drink too much.

Decluttering wise - 3 tshirts out yesterday. Well not out exactly but in a bag ready to go which might well be today.

IHate - that would drive me mad. The making a mess of the room I mean.

On a more positive note - a few years ago when on holiday in Australia I bought a chunky silver link bracelet that I loved and wore all the time. I lost in last November travelling back from the US. Tried to replace it but couldn’t find th exact one. Bought something similar a few months ago but it was a bit flimsy and broke. Had a random look on line the other day and spotted one very like it on Amazon. Ordered it and it arrived yesterday and it is exactly like the one I lost. Same weight and feel on. SO happy!

IHateYourCarpet · 17/05/2018 09:37

Mess does drive me mad Cider. I'm by no means pristine, but everything has its place and I just don't particularly cope well with things being untidy. I think DH and I are just either extreme, which is what causes the issue.

DS is delighted with his beanbag. He's easily pleased Grin he's practicing sitting up on it as he can't physically fall off it.

If the books don't go on eBay, I think I'm going to just stick them on gumtree as a job lot for collection. They need to be gone by Wednesday when DM brings god knows how many books with her. Then I need to sort through those.

I need to check with DH if the cot has sold on eBay. If not I need to sell that and get it collected pretty quickly too.

I just feel like I've hit a bit of a dead end. Like I'm not really throwing stuff out, but just waiting for people to want to buy things.

I'm going to tackle the fridge/freezer/cupboard and come up with a proper meal plan and work through what we actually have.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 17/05/2018 10:10

Ineed clutter drives me mad too, I feel I'm constantly tidying and sorting for dh and dds to mess it up again. I used to be quite messy but after sorting my dad's flat which was piled with stuff and was horrendous, I have become obsessive about clearing clutter and dusting. I'm alot more ruthless than I used to be about keeping momentos.

I have been slowly adding bits to get rid of, yesterday was a pair of jeans that don't fit properly and annoy me each time i wear them. And a load of conditioner combing dds hair. Today I'm going to sort out the cutlery drawer before work as its driving me mad each time i open it. 😂

LilQueenie · 17/05/2018 11:15

My house is a disaster zone so 1 a day isn't going to get me far. Yesterday was so sunny I was out with dd after school. I did however manage another 10 magazines in the recycling.

SandAndSea · 17/05/2018 11:23

@StealthNinjaMum - Yes, I think I might look at getting a fire-proof, lockable box too. I'm resistant to bringing in another 'thing' but I think it might be sensible - it would be good for passports, wills etc. I wonder what's around in the affordable 'fire proof and theft proof' box market? I don't want a built-in safe but maybe something I can lock to the rafters in the loft which we can easily take with us when we move?

My clutter clearing yesterday was quite subtle but still worthwhile - I managed to clear quite a bit of dust from under the bed. I can't lift it on my own so, like a chimp, I fashioned a tool using a long stick, a sock and an elastic band. It was worth it in the end. :)

Today, I've got to have a dedicated clean & tidy-up as I've got visitors coming later.

My item today is a big bag of pot pourri.

IHateYourCarpet · 17/05/2018 11:41

It's so irritating isn't it nocuts? I feel like I go to bed with a tidy house and wake up to chaos! DS can't be blamed, he can only just crawl Grin I shall raise him to he tidy! Somehow ...

BuffysFavouriteStake · 17/05/2018 11:50

Thanks for the advice, (5 stone Stealth? Bloody hell!!!) I might have a look at the weight loss threads later, hadn't weighed myself for years, so been in denial about how bad it is Blush

Alas, Cider, I feel your pain... I drink too much, and half heartedly try lots of different diets, but ignore the no alcohol parts, so unsurprisingly they never work Blush

On the decluttering side, I got so annoyed with the bathroom of doom, I threw everything into the bath, and scrubbed and steamed the disgusting floor, it is now clean and smells lovely, and the incontinent terriers have been banned!!

Today will be cleaning the walls, and going through everything in bath, should be a lot to chuck Grin

CiderwithBuda · 17/05/2018 11:59

Two pairs of pjs out so far today. Was folding laundry and one pair was really bobbly so put them to go and then remembered I bought a new pair yesterday so added another pair that I’m not keen on to the pile.

Have decided to tackle my desk this afternoon . Was supposed to do it last week but didn’t. Don’t have to pick DS up until 5 so have plenty of time.

CiderwithBuda · 17/05/2018 12:00

And Stealth meant to say bloody well done on the 5 stone!

NaMajesty · 17/05/2018 12:05

Carpet it can be done! I have almost definitely got undiagnosed OCD, DH is a scruffy messy bugger and literally cannot 'see' mess. Sitting at a desk literally covered in crap piled high would not make him bat and eyelid. Whereas it would make me have a panic attack.

Our DS's put laundry in the basket, make their own beds, tidy up their toys, help put the bins out and do other general household jobs. They're like my little cleaning minions. And eldest DS can make a good coffee

MrsOH2004 · 17/05/2018 14:02

Afternoon, I'm the same with weight loss, I used to be skinny, this week I have lost 4lbs so pleased with that.

Have got rid of some puzzle books, straight into the recycling.

MrsOH2004 · 17/05/2018 14:42

11 of Dd2's toys in charity shop bag, back hurts now though, and over 20 silly items from happy meals etc, feel like I've accomplished something for a change Smile

IHateYourCarpet · 17/05/2018 14:47

20 parcels to the post office.

5 bits that were quite manky gone from the fridge.

Honestly, the freezing glass jars tip on here is has amazed me! I had no idea you could do it. With it only being me and DH eating I often have half jars of pesto and stuff knocking around. I've saved a couple of jars of pesto, and some mushroom sauce.
