OP posts:
fannyannie · 16/05/2007 12:27

PAper ones I call Napkins

Cloth ones I call Servette

SpawnChorus · 16/05/2007 12:27

Napkin. 'Serviette' brings me out in hives.

electra · 16/05/2007 12:28

napkin

Carmenere · 16/05/2007 12:28

Napkin

nogoes · 16/05/2007 12:29

I do the opposite to Fannyannie.

MrsBadger · 16/05/2007 12:30

napkin

'serviette' is just a nasty word, like 'moist' or 'gusset'

nogoes · 16/05/2007 12:31

I suppose it depends on what you use them for MB

Wotzsaname · 16/05/2007 12:32

I wish there was an mn edit for spellings!

OP posts:
Pollyanna · 16/05/2007 12:35

napkin or paper napkin

SpawnChorus · 16/05/2007 12:35

When my gusset gets moist I stick a serviette on it.

Wotzsaname · 16/05/2007 12:36

so one would definitely not to use a 'tea towel', but a cloth napkin that looks like a small tea towel?

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 16/05/2007 12:38

what?
if I'm drying up I use a teatowel
if I'm stopping stuff spilling on my lap while I'm eating I use a napkin
If I'm out of clean napkins and want to stop stuff spilling on my lap I wear an apron

stleger · 16/05/2007 12:39

I was in Burger King at the weekend and someone asked for serviettes. I wanted to correct him. I am turning into a mad old lady.

ThisIsDavinaPleaseDoNotSwear · 16/05/2007 12:39

Serviette is very working class apparently (well according to a book I am curently reading called 'Watching the English').

As is 'Lounge' and calling lunch dinner and dinner tea etc!

So I guess I am working class then

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 16/05/2007 12:46

Oh, Davina. I HATE HATE HATE the word 'lounge'. And 'couch'. You would sit on a 'sofa' in a 'sitting room', surely.
They are napkins. Serviette sounds like a pretentious name for a paper napkin. Is it Tea Towel or Tea cloth? I tend to go for cloth, but that would be mainly because I wouldn't want DD drying up with the towel we keep for drying our hands in the kitchen.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2007 12:47

WTF is with all this 'that' common/working class whatever the hell' load of BS?

Serviette is the word for a napkin in French.

Therefore, in English, it's a napkin or a paper towel if it's on a roll.

Wotzsaname · 16/05/2007 12:47

Napkin Etiquette

  1. Place the napkin in your lap immediately after the last person has been seated at your table.
  2. Do not shake it open.
  3. If the napkin is large put the fold toward your waist.
  4. If you must leave the table during the meal be sure to put the napkin on your chair or to the left of your plate.
  5. When you are finished eating, place the napkin to the right of the plate.

Don't forget to do this later at the table in dinning room/kitchen for supper/tea/dinner/or on tray on lap in lounge/sitting room/front room.

serviette is poncy

nogoes · 16/05/2007 12:48

Lounge is a term I have only ever heard used by estate agents. I call it the sitting room and dh calls it the living room. These days I hear lots of people refer to as the drawing room which I should imagine is the proper term. Anyone know?

hana · 16/05/2007 12:49

lounge is v north america, sounds odd to use it in context with britihs houses

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 16/05/2007 12:50

Oooh. I love these minefields of etiquette!

tissy · 16/05/2007 12:50

napkin, but paper ones (shudder) are paper napkins!

expatinscotland · 16/05/2007 12:52

I never heard lounge in N. America, but I've only ever lived in the Southern and Western US.

It's a living room.

Napkins are just that. 'Kitchen roll' is paper towel.

Supper or dinner is the evening meal - supper tends to be more Southern term.

Tea is a beverage.

Tutter · 16/05/2007 12:53

i have to admit that i was brought up saying 'nana', 'lounge' and 'dinner/tea'

but now say granny, sitting room and lucnh/dinner

am i a hopeless pretender?

Wotzsaname · 16/05/2007 12:54

We call our hell hole of a small play room a library!

"dcs are in the library" lol.... (just a silly joke at home)
