How to have a gorgeous smelling house.

Any tips much appreciated!
My house downstairs is all open plan with unfortunately nowhere to put the cat's litter tray except tucked into a corner of the kitchen. He won't use a coveted litter tray and will go on beds/sofa instead if I don't leave an open tray. Although I keep this very clean I'm conscious that my house always smells vaguely catty. I'd love to have one of those houses that people walk into and just think " mmm nice smell"
If you have a delicious smelling house, how do you achieve it?
I go through air freshener like it's going out of fashion but it doesn't achieve the result I'm looking for.
Thank you.

I went to view a property recently that had 2 dogs and one of those automatic spray things in every room. The smell was terrible; pet mixed with headache inducing chemicals, even my young dc picked up on it immediately.

I think for those of us with pets we need to rethink furniture/flooring choices rather than pump in extra chemicals. Wooden flooring rather than carpets, leather or washable sort furnishings are key to minimizing smells in the first place.

On the run...parking so I can read later. Have two smelly dogs gaggg

We've got pets so I'm always looking for nice smelling stuff. Unfortunately I don't like most things as they smell artificial and revolting to me- I don't like most of the zoflora scents, can tolerate the Christmas ones but they're hard to find all year round.

I recently bought an Aldi diffuser (Jo Malone copy) which smells lovely but only if you lean right over it.

I want an Ashleigh Burwood fragrance lamp, as you don't have to leave them burning and they are very well reviewed. The fragrances sound lovely but I would love to smell them in someone's house to make sure before I shell out!

Dodie66 · 06/05/2018 10:35

I bought the Tesco wood pellets

Smeddum · 06/05/2018 10:36

Reed diffusers are really dangerous for cats. It can burn them.

WheelyCote · 06/05/2018 10:39

I saw one on Pinterest to help bathrooms smell nice.

Lemongrass oil - a couple of drops on the inside of the cardboard of toilet roll. It does work but..

I have two teenage lads and can't keep up with the loo rolls they use hah.

I have asthma and can't use fragrances so we use odor absorbers (aka air sponge). Plus we keep a hepa air filter on alost 24/7.

Activated charcoal also works. Place a few pieces in a bowl and keep near the litterbox.

*almost

I've got 5 cats and 3 rats, i use one of the flameless wax melt thingies, 11 from asda, its gr3at and as I often forget to turn it off doesnt burn my house down Grin

WheelyCote · 06/05/2018 10:57

Mumma how long do the wax things last for?

FlamingGoat · 06/05/2018 11:05

Get a lock for your windows that let you open them enough for air but not enough for cats to escape. They are around £7 on Amazon.

PetulantPolecat · 06/05/2018 11:09

I’m sorry, you’ve got cat piss and feces in an open tray your kitchen?

Mummaganoush · 06/05/2018 11:10

Wheely i popped one on last night at about 5pm and on reading the thread title ran down to turn it off just now... because I am quite stupid haha. There was still oil in the melter, the scent was just not as strong.

I also use those timed spritzer glade thingies, one by front door one above bathroom door and one in playroom (where rats are) only real issue with those is they run out of battery and you dont tend to notice.

Eolian · 06/05/2018 11:12

I have a large dog. The house no longer smells doggy since we got replaced all the carpets with hard flooring and got leather sofas instead of fabric ones. I don't mind nice scented candles occasionally, but a house that smells of air freshener or zoflora is a bit grim imo.

sandgrown · 06/05/2018 11:15

Neutrodol air fresheners seem good at absorbing pet smells

user1494670108 · 06/05/2018 11:19

Have you tried wooden cat litter? Smells piney (if your cat will use it!)

MillicentF · 06/05/2018 11:23

Let the cat out?

bobstersmum · 06/05/2018 11:27

I honestly think the key is fresh air. I try not to use constant air freshener type things because I can't see that it's good for you to be breathing in 24/7. Windows open as much as possible front and back so air can flow and light a decent quality candle for an hour here and there.

Charley50 · 06/05/2018 11:50

Can't the cat go outside?

We have an aromatherapy diffuser. It's great. A lot of candles and reeds are very chemically, not very good for the lungs.

And yes, open the window!

WheelyCote · 06/05/2018 12:00

Is febreeze any good??

Charley50 · 06/05/2018 12:09

Ooh I love a bit of Febreze!

SureIusedtobetaller · 06/05/2018 13:36

Activated charcoal near the tray and an aromatherapy diffuser- love mine. You can buy lots of different oils and change it according to your mood and you’re not breathing in all the chemicals.

WheelyCote · 06/05/2018 14:15

Going to give this one a go, I'll let you know if it's any good

I go in to loads of houses for work. Those automatic air freshener things with a timer on do the job pretty well ime
