Rotary airers - do you leave yours up down in or out?

Our landlord brought us a new rotary airer today - its only got 3 arms which is a tad annoying as I would have preferred 4. Lovely sparkly new (and free) though. And the first airer Ive had in a decade that has been new.

So what do people do - leave them out and up. Out and down. Fold and bring indoors. Cover on or off. Im guessing this is something people only do when they are new and sparkly but perhaps not.

What is the MN view on rotary airers when not in use?

Leave them out and up. I'm sure lots have best intentions to cover when not in use in but in practice I reckon that malarkey falls by the way side after two weeks.

EscapistTendencies · 03/05/2018 15:26

I got a new one last year and put it down and cover it to stop it getting covered in spider webs, takes a few seconds.

Cacofonix · 03/05/2018 15:27

I put it down and put a cover on it. I'm a bit anal like that. Grin

MadisonAvenue · 03/05/2018 15:28

I remove mine after using it and put it's cover on. I've been doing that since first buying it over 7 years ago. We have a small garden so it dominates it if left there.

Pinga · 03/05/2018 15:59

I think I might last two weeks........

Out, down and cover on in the summer.

In shed over winter.

If you leave it out, up or uncovered it will get dirty and covered in bird poo and your clothes will get dirty marks on them.

SluttyButty · 03/05/2018 16:07

Down and cover. I visibly shiver if I've forgotten and it's covered in bird shit and spiders webs 😂

Monkeybunkey · 03/05/2018 16:14

Another down and cover here. I meant to take it out of the ground and put it in the garage over the winter, but ended up just putting a cable tie round the bottom of the cover to hold it on through the winter!

e1y1 · 03/05/2018 16:16

Leave it out but the cover always on as it was more than I would have like to have paid.

e1y1 · 03/05/2018 16:17

*and don’t want it rusting (I don’t know if it would).

0h · 03/05/2018 16:23

I don't leave it up but folded as they're a hazard then - especially for children playing in the garden.

I take mine down completely (cover and put in shed) when not in use.

PiggeryPorcombe · 03/05/2018 16:27

Down and cover on. Or I did until the cover blew away one day. We live by fields and the dust makes the line mucky and leaves marks on the clothes. Really I should buy another cover.

PiggeryPorcombe · 03/05/2018 16:27

Fields as in muddy fields with crops growing. Not grassy ones.

FrangipaniBlue · 03/05/2018 17:22

It's either up/open or down but with a cover on.

down with no cover is just asking for a tangled disaster........

flapjackfairy · 03/05/2018 18:12

I always cov er mine as well My cover blew away in a storm a few weeks ago so I bought a new cover which has a drawstring at the bottom to prevent it happening again. It was only a couple of pounds on amazon so well worth the money.

RoseMartha · 05/05/2018 07:01

In summer up and out unless grass is being cut then it's covered.

Winter covered but up.

eurochick · 05/05/2018 07:05

Down and covered. It takes less time than cleaning it each time.

bonzo77 · 05/05/2018 07:17

Up and out all year round. As do the pegs. Because there can be good drying days even in winter Gets wiped in spring when regular use starts. I put the pegs in a lingerie bag in the washing machine to clean them up. And no, my clothes don’t have dirty marks on them.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/05/2018 07:47

We leave ours out, uncovered slattern
We inherited it in this way when we bought our house, I don’t think it would even fold up now!

WeAllHaveWings · 05/05/2018 10:02

If we leave ours up it gets covered in spider webs by morning. So we put down and put a cover on it during the summer. In the winter its in the shed.

Pinga · 08/05/2018 12:27

If you leave it out, up or uncovered it will get dirty and covered in bird poo and your clothes will get dirty marks on them.

Tbh Ive never made a habit of putting mine down and covering it (old one wouldnt fold anyway) in 20 years and have never had dirty marks on my clothes or bird poo. Well maybe once or twice

Ours gets the cover on and into the shed between uses. My husband doesn't like looking at it when not in use.

erniepigy · 08/05/2018 12:57

Depends on how fussy you are in your garden, they don't look very nice up or down. If you put it away over winter it will last longer.
Years ago you would have been considered very slovenly to leave them up except on wash day, Monday's. Washing out on a weekend especially Sunday was a big no no and considered very bad form. My pet hate is Christmas lights left up all year...why?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/05/2018 15:55

Down, cover on and in shed. I have a couple of different spots I can put it up in depending on how we are using the garden.
