Scummy vests - how do you get them white again?

I have had a bit of a scan through old messages, and can't seem to find an answer to this one.
DSs vests all seem to have scummy marks round the collar bit. Is there a way to get them white again? I have only just bought new ones and they all look stained with grime already.

if they are white and 100% cotton, I add about an egg cup of bleach to a bucket of water and soak them in that for half an hour before washing them hot.

cheaper than Vanish!

When my dds were little and wore bibs I used to soak them in Milton fluid prior to washing them. It was brilliant at getting out all those horrible stains.

Stains from that day get Vanish stick

Ingrained grub on white cotton things (eg when you get out the old vests for the next baby and they are grey) gets a squirt of bleach in a sinkful of water overnight (also bleaches my white sink nicely ).
Works a treat on ancient muslins too.

Watch out for Vanish or similar - both my DS and DH come up in rashes when used in the past. It is now banned from our house!

I was wondering about Vanish as DS1 has sensitive skin. Will soaking in bleach affect his skin too? I might havr to give the milton approach a try first... is that more "natural" than bleach?

all belached things get rinsed and put throught the washing machine - not had a problem with reactions (but then never had a prob with Vanish either)

Milton is bleach, just a very low concentration of the same stuff you squirt down the loo.
