I used to but discovered that Which had said it cleans no better than just water. Ruined many cloth nappies Washing with these.

BoogleMcGroogle · 29/04/2018 07:26

I did. Twice. Unsurprisingly it didn't work, either on smelly running kit or baked bean encrusted school uniform. I suppose if you are a very clean, inactive person it's worth a go. Otherwise, stick with Ecover ( it Persil bio as we are now on)

Like pps, I tried them. I used them for a few months and they were 'OK'. Then my washing machine developed a horrendous smell which we couldn't clear. Eventually had to get someone to look at it and they advised me that the eggs were the problem. Powders etc contain ingredients etc which help to clear the pipes and of course the fragrance stops most smells. Now I use powder and pop the eggs in to act as an extra, gentle agitator to help clean. I don't bother with the little balls inside the eggs. I also use the eco egg dryer thingies as they help the go dryore quickly.

dadtoseven · 29/04/2018 07:50

I use an old eco ball. Haven't used detergent for a couple of years, now.

I have some in for occasional emergencies.

We don't have children at the nappy or spaghetti on white shirt stage, though.

Avoid, avoid, avoid

Using eco eggs or similar results in clothes not getting clean and a mouldy, smelly washing machine.

I tried them years ago and it resulted in the mould in the machine making DD's eczema eorse, and a very stinky machine.

Washine powders containing bleach not only clean your clothes, they clean your washer and kill off bacteria and mould as well.

Eco eggs are a terrible idea.

dadtoseven · 29/04/2018 07:57

How odd. We've not had any problems. Maybe it's a hard/soft water thing?

We do mainly cool washes too, so not killing bacteria with hot water.

Freddiesgirl · 29/04/2018 07:57

I've just got one because of my DD eczema so I'm watching this with interest, only been using it a month or so and results have been fine, but now I'm worried about smelly washing machines!

LoniceraJaponica · 29/04/2018 08:06

DD's eczema improved when I started using Ariel washing powder. It isn't the enzymes in bio powder that aggravate eczema but the perfumes. DD has been eczema free for years now.

My washer doesn't smell any more either. The smell is caused by mould and bacteria, and any decent washing powder containing bleach, coupled with a high temperature wash will deal with it. And don't use laundry liquid as they clog up your machine and don't contain bleach.

Bowerbird5 · 29/04/2018 08:07

I found them ok for light washing eg. Tops worn but not anything grubby. It didn't remove stains like paint from school clothes. Mind you nothing gets the yellow out. Or blue.

Didn't get a stinky machine.

thefourgp · 29/04/2018 08:14

Watching with interest as I had been thinking about getting them but a colleague said it knocked their drum off balance.

palmfronds · 29/04/2018 08:16

I've been using mine for a couple of years, no problems with laundry and my machine definitely doesn't smell! But I do occasionally run a hot wash with biotex when I'm doing white cottons so maybe that's the answer?

dadtoseven · 29/04/2018 08:26

I do a very occasional maintenance wash with soda crystals or a splash of bleach. Maybe that sorts it.

millimat · 29/04/2018 08:29

I'm so glad I asked! Thank you everybody - going to avoid them Grin

I've used powder for years after reading that it kept the machine cleaner, but the repair guy told me recently that liquid is better if you do mostly quick washes, because the powder doesn't break down and clogs up the pipes. I'm almost afraid to try it as I've never found that things get as clean with liquid.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/04/2018 09:17

Doing maintenance washes and using powder and hot washes every now and again is indeed the answer palmfronds and dadtoseven.
I was using the eco egg exclusively, and it made DD's eczema so bad that it kept her awake at night.

It was when I read advice on MN about how to deal with a stinky washer that I bought Ariel. I didn't realise at the time that it must have been the mould/bacteria that was causing the eczema. The fact that her eczema disappeared after using Ariel was a happy accident.

I read that laundry liquids don't contain any bleaching agents so perhaps that is why they don't get your clothes as clean ASqueaking

@ASqueakingInTheShrubbery

Last time our machine got bunged up, the repair man said it was down to using liquid rather than powder. Ended up having to have a new machine. I now use powder mostly, occasionally use liquid for clothes that need a cool wash. I use dettol washing machine cleaner regularly and so far, my machine has remained smell free.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/04/2018 19:52

I know this is tempting fate, but in the 15 years we have had this washer I have never had a repair man out. Nor did I in the 23 years we had our last washer. (Zanussi and Bosch)
