We're moving to a new place and we need a new washing machine after a week of constant rain I'm thinking of buying a washer dryer, anyone got one? I've heard some can be not so great at washing or drying, and tips?

twinsetandpearls · 14/05/2007 21:25

bad not bed, I have a one track mind sorry

Nikki76 · 14/05/2007 21:26

I agree! We had one in our renting days to save space and it was useless at drying!!! Total waste of money - buy separate - really worth the extra space taken up

SenoraPostrophe · 14/05/2007 21:26

they're brill if you don't have much space. hotpoint one is fine.

but being twice as useful, they are twice as likely to go wrong...

tortoise · 14/05/2007 21:26

Really Bad! I had one and it was useless especially at drying!

Charleesunnysunsun · 14/05/2007 21:26

Bad, we had one once that ripped several items of clothes, pkus if one bit packs up you loose both functions.

lyrabelacqua · 14/05/2007 21:27

They do take much loger to dry than a proper dryer. Better to get separates if you've got the space. I'd be lost without my dryer (especially at times like this morning when i realised ds1's school uniform was still wet in the washing machine at 8.30am!!)

Bad.

Don't agree with dryers at all though, so am biased

hoxtonchick · 14/05/2007 21:29

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad

lyrabelacqua · 14/05/2007 21:29

How do people manage in winter with no dryer?

ellenkpa · 14/05/2007 21:30

i have one, i've had it for 3.5 years now and no problems, so long as I don't overfill it the drying function works well. it's a Ariston and was one of the cheapest around at the time.

SenoraPostrophe · 14/05/2007 21:30

I used to use the microwave

Washersaurus · 14/05/2007 21:30

Not really good for a family. My life has been transformed by having separate machines - I can now wash and tumble at the same time (and much more effectively with my energy efficient machines I hastily add)

Smurfgirl · 14/05/2007 21:31

lyrabelacqua - we don't have a dryer - I just hang everything on airers to dry in the winter, or over the bannister, I stagger washing towels and bedding

We had a washer/dryer in one house i lived in (indesit) it took ages to dry, i never used it tho - housemates did

Ceolas · 14/05/2007 21:31

ours was very bad.

duke · 14/05/2007 21:31

ohh it's not looking good for the washer dryer!

lilymolly · 14/05/2007 21:31

bad, they take ages to dry clothes and not as quick as a normal seperate dryer.

ALittleMouseWithCrocsOn · 14/05/2007 21:33

They're pretty bad IME. They don't wash as well as they should and they take forever to dry, and the dryer is very harsh on clothes. Plus you can only dry half of a wash load at a time. I have just replaced my washer/dryer with a washing machine because I never used the dryer function as it was so useless. I hang the clothes on an airer in front of a radiator overnight instead.

If you get a washing machine with a fast spin then your washing will air-dry quite quickly. In the summer put the airer in front of a sunny window and your clothes will dry in a flash.

mamijacacalys · 14/05/2007 21:36

Complete waste of money - are pants.

cherrycake · 14/05/2007 21:42

Sticking up for washer/driers!!!!
I love my zanussi washer drier, its quiet, quick (54 mins for full wash) and fast (1600)
love it love it love it!!

lyrabelacqua · 14/05/2007 21:45

Maybe it depends on the brand. Ours was Indesit and was useless.

SleepIsForTheWeak · 14/05/2007 21:53

the dryers in the combined washer / dryer are rubbish. Because they are not vented, the steam just stays inside the drum. We have to keep manually opening ours, flapping the clothes around so the steam can evapourate, and putting the clothes back in! Boring.

NineUnlikelyTales · 14/05/2007 22:00

Sleepisfortheweak I am surprised that you have to do that with your w/dryer. I have had one (well, two) for 8 years and never had to do it. But I wouldn't have one through choice, only lack of space - as others have said, separates are better and more efficient, and you can half the time it takes to empty the washing basket. If you are really pushed for space they are ace though.

If you buy a w/dryer, always get the extended warranty. It's the only thing I would buy it for, but w/dryers are soooo unreliable and constantly break down. PLus you do give them a hammering, because of them doing both jobs.

petunia · 14/05/2007 22:05

Think it depends on the make. My Hoover washer/dryer died the death a few weeks ago and I've never been so glad to see the back of something in my life! I'd had it 6 years and had 2 doors fall off (don't think the door hinge was strong enough for the large door). It never gave a specially good wash and wasn't brilliant at drying stuff. Now got a Zanussi washing machine but will possibly look at getting a tumble dryer in the Autumn, and making room for it in the garage.
