Cleaning a toilet

My son's toilet is disgusting - what can I use to clean it? I've heard vinegar and I have some in the house but not white vinegar. Will dark do?

Why are you cleaning your son's toilet?

That1950sMum · 28/04/2018 16:54

Harpic White and Shine is the only toilet cleaner I've found that leaves the toilet seriously sparkly.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 28/04/2018 16:54

White vinegar and bicarb of soda - make a paste and scrub it. Stinky but it works a treat.

AngelEyes46 · 28/04/2018 17:00

Thanks AsA - I will have to go and get and in the meantime use what I have in our cupboard.
Midthread - he has just moved in somewhere and am helping him clean his place. I know I should leave him to do the toilet but mums are as mums are

Domestic lime scale remover. Leave on for an hour, then Use an old sponge, stick your hand down and scrub hard. Minging, but works!

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 17:01

Ermm... just don't use balsamic!

  • the best option would be to get your son to don some gloves and scrub it himself.
... or just dump some un-eco chemicals down it Confused ?!!
MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 17:02

Ahh, my apologies - if he's just moved in that's a different matter Flowers

AsAProfessionalFekko · 28/04/2018 17:06

The Harpic tablet things (like large alka seltzers) are quite good too.

jrtt · 28/04/2018 17:10

If you can get it, use hypochlorite. It's a very strong bleach dairy farmers use to clean down their parlours, but I know a lot of garden centres stock it because people use it to clean their patio slabs, decking etc. Chuck a bit of that down it and I guarantee it will sparkle.

Similarly I spray it very very diluted on the tiles, around the shower etc. Brings the grout up good as new. Just be really careful not to walk across it if you do your floor tiles and then walk on your carpets - it will bleach everything, even when significantly watered down!

CherryBlossomSeason · 28/04/2018 17:10

Coca cola and denture tablets - a whole tube of them

Olivo · 28/04/2018 17:16

Oh, and WD40 is brilliant on yellow seats!

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 28/04/2018 17:18

@Olivo - yellow seats? like yellow cloth seats?
... mind, at times I think WD40 will fix all problems...
that reminds me

pigpoglet · 28/04/2018 17:20

Hg do a high strength toilet cleaner you can get in Homebase and places like that. Their products are fab !

Olivo · 28/04/2018 18:33

Erm, no. I have kids who pee on the seat, it turns yellow....Blush
WD40 gets it off!

mercurymaze · 28/04/2018 18:36

Empty out all the water and use cleaner with limescale remover

Midthreademergencynamechange · 28/04/2018 20:26

I won't be helping my adult children to clean their houses. I will suggest they Google it and then get on with it as I did when I left home at 18 (apart from the Google bit).

"Mums are as mums are" doesn't resonate with me.

ReluctantlyRedundant101 · 30/04/2018 19:33

WD40 on pissy toilet seats?!
Tell me more!

Olivo · 01/05/2018 16:54

Our toilet seats are now about 5 yrs old but expensive to replace. The weeks in our house seem of be a bit hit and miss so some are very yellow at the back and front. Spray on the WD40 and give a scrub with a sponge, then wipe off. No idea how it works, but it does!

ReluctantlyRedundant101 · 01/05/2018 17:27

I’m definitely going to check that out I have a toilet where the fittings are hidden away so dear looks like a bit of a ball ache to replace Hmm

Sparrowlegs248 · 01/05/2018 23:01

Another vote for the harpic tablets. Work really well

Skittlesandbeer · 01/05/2018 23:07

By all means do your research and help by buying the products. Then supervise your son doing the job, and then show him (in words) what a normal ‘maintenance’ clean is like, plus how often to do it.

So that someday he won’t be standing over the loo looking puzzled, with a bottle a window spray and a square of steel wool. Like my 50yo DH last week.
