When should you renew a mattress?

Have you views on this. We bought a very comfortable pocket spring mattress in the eighties. So it is old but has always been so comfortable. The mattress is turned regularly and we have a topper on top. I cannot feel any springs or anything out of place. It’s the sort of mattress that you long to get back to after a holiday! However, just recently my back aches in the morning (long term back trouble) and I keep seeing adverts saying that you should change your mattress after a few years. Any advice? I know it’s a silly thing to ask but don’t really want to fork out for a new one and risk not getting one as comfortable as this. Welcome input. Thank you.

I'm on my third mattress in 30 years - they have all been high quality, Heals, Vispring.

The advert (is it Dreams?) says 8 years, but then again they would say that!

We replaced ours (well, got a whole new bed) last year and we'd had ours since 2000. It was long overdue really, especially since it was a relatively cheap IKEA one. Like, I found my old mattress really comfortable but the base of the bed was falling apart so we had to replace the whole lot. I was worried about finding one that was as comfy but, honestly, our new one is even better. You can try out loads of different mattresses in the shops so it's pretty easy to find the right one for you.

Well our mattress was bought end of the eighties. Sounds ridiculous I know but it has always been so comfy. It is on a slatted wooden base but haven’t found this detrimental to its comfort. One reservation is the weight of pocket spring mattresses as we like to turn it regularly. Ours is just about manageable but not so others I have heard about. We must certainly need another. I’m off to John Lewis, Debenhams or Dreams. Thank you so much for replying.

I've just bought a new one. Shop said to replace every 8-10 years.
