Help me get rid of vile smell in my cupboard

Im in the middle of a kitchen refit. It includes converting my under stairs cupboard into a pantry.
6 weeks ago I emptied it of the mountain of junk in there. Cleaned the 70's Marley Tile floor and emulsion the walls.

For the past week a weird smell has been developing in the cupboard . At first I thought it was the paint and started propping the door open overnight after the workmen had gone home.

This week my workmen and I have noticed the smell more as it has become stronger. The gas meter is in the cupboard so Monday they gas people came out and confirmed it's definitely not a gas leak- not that it smells too much like gas tbh.

One of my workmen says it smells like cat pre to him but I'm not convinced. We don't have a cat although I suppose one might have got in with all the doors open for workmen to come and go at the moment.

Whatever it is - it's pungent and getting stronger.

The new flooring goes down next week and is going into the cupboard so I am asking for any smell killing household tips you might have or any ideas on how to get rid of this awful pong before the new laminate floor goes down.

Painted our room and it smells like a chemical smell. Was told by wilko that it's the bacteria and to wash down with weakened bleach and then repaint. How are things for others now?

Was debating washing walls and hoping it goes over time. More noticeable in this heat wave we are having

Does the room get direct sun? I had this problem - it can happen with any make of paint - and the smell is triggered with direct sunlight and air, so opening windows makes it worse.
You can try washing down the walls but if that doesn't work long-term, Zinsser BIN then paint over that.

It's a north facing window so gets it first thing. Got window open a jar. Let's hope that washing it down with bleach solution works. I was debating just painting over it with a bathroom paint as it's mould resistant.

Did you use BIN?

I'm waiting for the painter to do it as I have other work for him as well, so I can't say for sure that it works. It's not been bad recently, I think because the sun's not shining directly in at the moment.

In my case it's the bathroom, and I thought it was a sewage smell. Plumber, drains specialist, water board and council all checked and found nothing. I was at my wits' end with it till I found a thread in a DIY forum about paint being the cause. Some people think it's a gas leak, others catpee, so the smell is not always the same. The Zinsser then a coat of paint on top seems to do the trick for most people but as I say, I haven't tried it yet.

By the way, I had used bathroom paint.

Strange as that is meant to have a mould inhibitor in 🤔 I heard the BIN isn't meant to be used in large areas, so will try the bleach and let you know how that goes :)
