Help! Bed bugs or fleas?!

mellongoose · 26/04/2018 07:47

DD is still coming into our bed at night so DH goes into the spare room. His legs (calves) are covered in bites.

They look like flea bites but neither DD or I are effected. How can I tell what I'm dealing with?

We have one dog who has just had a flea treatment, but is it possible that dormant fleas could have come alive?!! Dog never goes in bedrooms.

How can I tell if it is bed bugs or fleas?

What did you flea treat with? Was he ever affected when he slept in your bed?

Shmithecat · 26/04/2018 07:54

If it's just on his legs, my first thought is fleas.. what flea preparation did you use on your dog?

mellongoose · 26/04/2018 07:55

Can't remember the name. It was a big chunky tablet that I hid in some meat. It came from the vets and lasts 3 months. He had it last weekend.

DH started with these bites at the weekend also. Hard to say about which bed as he bed hops most nights!

If fleas were in the living room (only room downstairs with carpet) wouldn't DD and I also have bites?

You could still be being bitten, but your body just doesn't react to them. We had fleas in one of our old houses from the previous occupants. I was covered in loads of bites that swelled up. OH had none.

Even though the dog has been treated, you still need to treat your home as well. Personally, we just got a professional in and never had any more problems.

Does sound more like fleas if it's just his legs. You should be able to tell if it's bedbugs though - check both beds for blood spots, little black dots, and eggs that look like tiny grains of rice. Particularly in the corner seams of the mattress and the sheets.

Spam88 · 26/04/2018 08:05

A pharmacist might also be able to identify what's caused the bites.

Thanks all.

Have checked the beds and can't see anything untoward. Will spray the lounge. Am just boil washing dog beds - sigh!!

Check the spare room, where your DH sleeps for any bed bug faeces. They most often are black blood spots that they leave. If you don't see any faeces signs you don't have to worry about bed bugs.

One more thing bed bug bites usually bite the upper parts of your body and rarely your feet.

I read the bites difference here -> www.fantasticpestcontrol.co.uk/bed-bug-control/flea-or-bed-bug-bites/

Hope this helps.

Are you sure the tablet was for fleaing it sounds more like a worming tablet flea treatments is usually a spot on. I could be wrong though.

Bravecto will only kill fleas that bite the dog, if there's fleas on a carpet anywhere they'll only die if they bite the dog, with warmer weather it's possible any flea eggs in the carpet are hatching. You need to treat the carpet and soft furnishings to be sure and get rid of any lurkers.

Shmithecat · 26/04/2018 14:45

Get some indorex in and vacuum daily for a couple of weeks.

mellongoose · 26/04/2018 18:06

Thanks @Shmithecat. I'll try that 👍

Get some bicarbonate of soda

Spread all over and rub really well into bed mattress leave it a while (about 2 hours)

Then vacuum it up

Apparently it dries out bugs and kills them

Anyway, not dangerous to humans or cats/dogs etc

SubtitlesOn · 26/04/2018 18:18

If it is fleas then get flea bombs

Then go out of house after exploding it

Open windows when you come in

Really work SmileSmileSmile

salt works too.
Follow SubtitlesOns instructions.
Leave it, then brush excess off. Then vacuum thoroughly, and often. Empty dustpan and vacuum cleaner into a sealable bag, and bin it outside.
Put a cheap flea collar or some salt in the vacuum cleaner afterwards.

Sellotape is quite useful for catching fleas.

I've had this I was bitten to hell by cat fleas. I used Indorex and 2 flea foggers to get rid. You need to make sure the dog is out of the house whilst you release the foggers you don't want it poisoned. Also spray the mattress both sides and hover round the skirting boards in all rooms.
