has anyone used mirror for the area above the worksurfaces, underneath the cupboards?

or do you think that would look ultra cheesy? nightmare to keep clean?

what's that area called anyway? not the splashback as that's behind the hob...

my kitchen is a kitchen / dining room with the table by the window. so the majority of the kitchen is against the back wall with no window - quite dark. i was thinking that having mirror along the wall bit would give a sense of space but not seen it done anywhere...

How about mirror tiles?

brimfull · 14/05/2007 08:28

hmmm, don't know it may look a bit bathroomy, but I get your reasoning.Other option is glass in a light colour like duck egg blue.
You would beable to see twice the mess on the worktop.

warthog · 14/05/2007 08:29

that's possible but i didn't want to have lines - just a big sheet...

so have you seen it done? and did it look ok?

ggirl - that's a VERY GOOD POINT! twice the mess... although i guess it would depend on the angle that you're standing, so hopefully the garden would be reflected rather than the messy countertop...

My friend has a stainless steel sheet as a splashback there and that looks good.

Anoter friend has very high gloss black tiles that mirror effect. Never seen an actual mirror though

Not quite but our old kitchen had mirrored panels on the cupboard doors and they were an absolute nightmare. Even the sligthtest smear looked really obvious, and they got chipped constantly.

my neighbour has got this. i wanted it too, but I have a few sockets on the backwall and was advised it would weak it too much. Also much more likely to get damage. Also, nightmare to clean, my neighbour is immaculate tho so hers looks great, but I hang my head in shame and admit mine wouldn't.

I also wanted one clean line, so I had matching granite fitted, so have same on countertop as back wall and am very pleased with result and it doesn't ever look mucky

stainless steel on back wall nightmare to clean, worse than morror by far.

I considered this before I went with the granite. hth

a kitchen shop must be able to tell you where in UK it's available.

sorry, meant to add, click on 'galerie' and you'll get loads of pictures of different coulours & styles

warthog · 14/05/2007 11:03

thanks ernest - i have looked at the glass option too. granite does look good on the wall too...

as for sockets, i saw those ones that are built into the counter top and pop up when you need them, otherwise are flush with the worksurface. i think this would work if i have enough storage to keep the worksurface clean and clutter free, otherwise i think i'll have to go for more a forgiving look...

thanks for the replies everyone!

have seen it done in a magazine with mirror mosaic tiles - gorgeous and sparkly but doesn't reflect the clutter straight back.

My mates has it. Always mucky. Just sort of emphasises they clutter in their kitchen.
