How to speed up online grocery shopping

gruffalopuffalo · 16/04/2018 16:44

Can anyone help?

I seem to take longer doing it online than driving to the shop, trawling round and driving home. I like to do it online because I then don't need to take my DC and there is a bigger range of products (my nearest store isn't very big) but would rather it saved time as well, since people on here seem to mention it as a time saver!

I think the problem is I shop quite frugally so I search for each item and go through the price per g/ml/kg, special offers, and so on, and that's how I choose which loaf of bread, which mince, which cereal, which toilet roll, etc. I don't just buy the same one each time so I can't just save one list on the Tesco site and click the items I need that week. But are there any other ways of speeding it up that I haven't thought of?

I thought Tesco saved everything you have ever bought on line in 'Favorites'? In which case after a few shops you will have a range of goods.
I must admit shopping takes me only about 10 mins (but then I often buy the same stuff over and over!)

Umm, I’m unsure if online shopping is any quicker per se, I just thought the appeal was that you don’t have to trawl the store, along with using fuel and all the other hassles that are entailed with store shppping, and of course the main benefit is you don’t have to pack up and cart your shopping from trolley, to car, to home etc.

Suppose if you were saving favourites or consistently buying the same things week in week out then the shop would be quicker, but as you say you don’t but the same products so you are having to search every week.

I’m not sure if it is Sainsbury or Tesco as I shop at both (but usually in their stores) but one of them (possibly both) allow you to search for a list all in one go, so you write out your list, and it will search for the whole list in one go and will show you multiple products in each category for you to choose.

LoveAGoodNameChange · 16/04/2018 18:43

I shop in Ocardo because you can filter everything by price per item/gram etc. Means that you get a true list of cheapest to most expensive. It also includes all the offers etc.
Prices are a bit higher than Tesco etc but I find it balances out

Can you search for white bread 800g that would get rid of results for non white and small sizes?

Sometimes I find it easier to add items to basket say for washing powder then delete from basket because you can’t get all offers or sizes on the same screen to compare. Once in your basket it’s easier compare without scrolling what’s best price per KG or whatever.

BertieBotts · 16/04/2018 18:48

Tesco used to have a list search function, so you write your list e.g. in Notepad and then search for it all in one go, then you just click on each item and it takes you to the correct shelf whrre you can sort by price.

Try that if it still exists.

Otherwise, write your list, then organise into sections so you just click through one at a time.

And YY IME the time saved is simply not needing to do all the gumf which comes with taking DC to the supermarket - it can easily take me hours to make an order.

BrownTurkey · 16/04/2018 18:51

I just add all my ‘instant shop’ (Morrisons) to the basket, then look up offers especially meat and fish ones, then I go through my basket and take out anything I don’t need, add anything not there that I do need. But it does help if you generally buy the same brands/items.

BertieBotts · 16/04/2018 20:07

If you notice that there are consistently items you buy the same brand of - for example, milk tends to be pretty constant IME and so do eggs, pasta - stick those into your favourites, then you can add those quickly without price checking.

Invisimamma · 16/04/2018 20:14

My dp does ours in around 15mins. I take slightly longer as I like a browse Smile.

We have a favourites list of all the items we usually buy (juice, ham, cheese, butter, fruit, milk, bread, cereal etc) is that for straight in the basket. I also write a meal plan and a list to shop for specific ingredients and meat and veg.

Also one big shop at the start of the month for all of he toilet roll, washing powder, cleaning supplies.

I think if you want to look at every special offer you’ll be quicker going to the shop and having a look.

gruffalopuffalo · 16/04/2018 21:37

Thanks all. Sounds like I either need to get on with it, or grit my teeth and buy things without knowing if I've got the best price Grin I just don't think I can handle that

Ocado give you a voucher off your next shop if you could have saved money elsewhere.

Sammysquiz · 17/04/2018 07:39

The Tesco app is quicker and easier to use than its website.

overmydeadbody · 17/04/2018 10:49

Gruffalo I use Tesco as my online provider the mostly the same brands are the ones on offer/ offering the best deal.

I go through the special offers on the website adding anything that will be good value for money, then go through my favourites song everything else.

Some things, like eggs, is always the same ones that are cheapest.

Usually it's own brand or their value brands like radmere farms.

You'll generally get the cheapest deals of you do that.

You do need a list though, to work from.

overmydeadbody · 17/04/2018 10:51

Take cheddar cheese for example, it's always either pilgrims choice or cathedral city on offer (500g), if both of those are in your favourites list is easy to see which is on offer and add that to your cart.

gruffalopuffalo · 17/04/2018 14:50

Thanks, I'll try the app and try putting the eggs (I get Tesco medium free range 80% of the time) and cheese (generally the value one is cheapest!) in my favourites and take it from there.

I do always work from a list but search each item and look at the whole range. I used Ocado years ago and found them expensive but might give them a go again if they deliver to my (rural) area.

Get the Tesco app.
I can do a weeks shop in 10 mins from my favourites and also check all offers

Ginkypig · 19/04/2018 01:17

You can sort using the Tesco app.

Price low to high
Special offers
Favourites
Area
Brand

Are all options you can search, it might take you a bit of time at first but soon you'll have an idea of the cost of say bread or milk or tea bags then you check the one you know is normally lowest against current special offers.

katmarie · 19/04/2018 02:14

www.mysupermarket.co.uk

Try this, it gives you cheaper options on what's in your basket, if they are available, and lets you compare between supermarkets too.

DontFundHate · 19/04/2018 18:56

@LoveAGoodNameChange I can't see sorting by price per kg etc on the app? Is it only on the desktop site?

sashh · 19/04/2018 20:22

Use 'my supermarket.com' you shop as normal with your chosen supermarket and then it lists anything cheaper or more for less. So I have found I put Tesco on brand bacon in my basket and at the end it offers me a 'swap' for a cheaper brand. It will also do it with different amounts so if you put 6 eggs in your basket it tell you it's cheaper per egg to buy 15.

Then it is sent to your chosen supermarket.

You can also keep shopping lists.

gruffalopuffalo · 19/04/2018 21:32

Interesting! Thanks. I'll need to try that.
