Undermount vs overmount sinks/drainers

Apologies if I haven't got the terminology right.

We are redoing our kitchen and the kitchen designer has recommended at undermount sink with grooves cut into the granite as a drainer. This is recommended for the kitchen and the utility areas. I have always been used to a traditional overmount sink with drainer.

We do have a dishwasher but I will be using the sink to do washing up. How practical is it to have a drainer cut into the granite? I can see that is looks very nice but I do want my kitchen to be practical and it to still look good in a few years.

Would it be more practical to have an overmount in the utility room regardless of what I do in the kitchen?

Does anyone have any experiences they can share with me on the pros and cons of this sink set up in the kitchen?

We are looking at either ther Sensa Granite, which I understand is sealed in manufacturing and is very hardwearing and practical or a Silestone worktop.

Any opinions would be really helpful, thank you very much.

I’ve just redone our kitchen and gone for under mount Belfast sink with drainer grooves on quartz worktop in kitchen. I was wary as you describe on the drainer grooves but they do actually seem to work well and look much better than overmount. The Belfast sink also gives lot of room to wash pots etc, since those are the only things that really go in there. The quartz worktop is white which I’m hoping won’t show limescale on the drainer once water softener in place.

Gone for overmount stainless steel sink on laminate in utility and that fits the bill too.

I actually think undermounted sinks are infinately more practical than overmounted (as well as looking nicer). It makes the area around the sink much easier to keep clean imo.

Thank you so much for your help. I agree I think undermount sinks do look nicer. I have been doing so much research on this. I have read somewhere that the granite or quartz around an undermount sink can get chipped quite easily with pots and pans. Has anyone experienced this? TIA

I like my undermount and grooves. Did get a JosephJoseph drainer thing which was effective. Don’t do much washing up now.
I regret not having a tap that pushes out more water though and wish it had been positioned closer to the sink.
