Rangemaster

I did start a thread on this in property/diy but haven't had any replies so posting here for some help.

We are redoing our kitchen and I am looking at either the Rangemaster Nexus SE or the Excel models.

I have never had a range before and I was wondering what experiences posters have had with Rangemaster and their customer care? I have also started a thread on fridge/freezers. I am feeling quite stressed at having to make decisions on appliances that cost a lot of money and I keep seeing bad reviews. Thank you.

Not sure if this will help but we got a second hand rangemaster (fully gas) when We bought our house and have found it really good. It is obviously a number of years old so the one door catch is.a bit stiff and the knobs looks worn but it still works really well and my cakes bake perfectly in it.

We get it professionally cleaned every year and it comes up really well and the amount of space to cook is great.

I have not had experience with other ranges but this is the best oven I have used and we will be getting something similar when we 're do our kitchen in a few years

Ohforfoxsakereturns · 09/04/2018 12:47

Have you looked at any other brands OP? Smeg do some really good range cookers.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 09/04/2018 12:51

Happygummibear - thank you your experience is really helpful.

Ohforfoxsakereturns - I had only really looked at Rangemaster until this morning when I saw some bad reviews and started to have a wobble. I have quickly looked at Smeg but not had a chance to look in any detail. Do you own a Smeg?

I think Rangemaster is a great brand, and we haven't had to use their customer service so I suppose that is a plus.
I have the Elan so similar in style to what you are looking at- it looks like the SE has an improved grill depth (the only negative on the Elan is the grill is so limited) so I would see that as a plus.
I like our hot plate/mine is a ridged griddle yours it seems would be a smooth pan. The wok stand is really handy.
If you envisage using all of the hob burners at once then they are well spaced out to cope with larger pans.
The SE has a slow cooker whereas mine has an under over tray drawer- to be honest I don't need a slow cooker (and a very low oven does that job if I am desperate) I do however need that under oven storage drawer
The ovens hold their heat and keep a consistent temperature.
I certainly use my oven/s a lot more now I have a RM before I was a hob addict as my oven was so shite.
Don't get swayed by fancy steam ovens, I find a bit of water in a tray in the oven does the trick if needed.

Love the roast tray in the door but you can remove it for a more versatile oven space.
I am pleased I went for the 110cm model.

incywincybitofa thank you so much for all your help.

It is interesting to have your opinion on the slow cooker as I have been dithering between the Nexus SE and the Excel which has a proofing draw/storage draw and no slow cooker. I can't make my mind up which one to go for.

I am looking at the 110cm model too and I was wondering how the hob would work with larger pans, so it is really good to hear that it works well.

Have you had any problems with keeping the hob clean? I have seen some reviews where people have complained that the hob was difficult to get clean.

I need to pop out for a few hours but I will catch up when I get home. Thank you everyone.

I don’t (I have an Aga) but I like them.

Have a look for your local Rangemaster Design Centre, they should be able to help.

If you happen to be based in the SE I can point you in the direction. (Being deliberately vague).

Our Rangemaster 110 is now approaching 24 years of age. Replaced the timer a couple of years ago and the door seals really need doing. Several places on the 'net do spares for them. The new ones don't seem to have a glass lid anymore, shame as it makes a good additional worktop!

Rafflesway · 09/04/2018 16:37

I have a black Classic Rangemaster which is now 11 years old - bought it from new when I had kitchen replaced - and I absolutely love it.

My SIL has a very expensive Miele built in Oven and hob. Her oven couldn't hold a candle to either my large gas or smaller electric fan oven in my Rangemaster. (I know Rangemaster are expensive - mine with the matching hood was around £2K but hers was much more than this.)

Have never had a single problem with it, it is really easy to keep clean and, despite being used constantly, it still looks like new.

Can't recommend highly enough! (You probably know but Rangemaster is the same company as AGA)

clairethewitch70 · 09/04/2018 16:38

I have a rangemaster 90, bought new 10 years ago. We did use customer service once, as the door handle was faulty and they sent a new one straight away. Love mine and when the time comes for replacement, I will by another.

Northumberlandlass · 09/04/2018 16:39

I have a Rangemaster Excel 110cm. I love it.
I can't think of a bad word to say about it and wouldn't hesitate recommending it.

ihatethecold · 09/04/2018 16:50

There was a thread on here a few days ago about range cookers.
I also started one that was really helpful.

SlightlyTired · 09/04/2018 17:55

I have a rangemaster excel 110 induction and I love it. I had a classic 90 in the last place and that was also fantastic. As others have said, the cooking space is fantastic and they are wonderfully reliable. We sold the classic 90 with the house and when we left it (after 7 years’ solid use) it looked as good as new except that the gold finish had rubbed off some of the knobs. I cook a lot and I make bread a couple of times a week.

I have a 12 year old Rangemaster Toledo. We've never needed to call customer service as it's never gone wrong.

My only problem with it is that the grill pan sits on two metal bits that are so high up that most of the time the food actually touches the elements (we're talking about quite flat food like cheese on toast) so when I use the grill pan I end up sitting it on the bottom and it takes longer to grill things and the elements are a sod to clean. So I rarely grill anything.

One comment I have is that you might want to check with a plumber about how much gas is required compared to your current cooker. When I had a new boiler last year my plumber told me that pipe thickness regulations have changed and he had to do a safety check to make sure that our pipes were thick enough to cope with the extra gas needed now (as opposed to 20 years ago when the house was built). We have a gas fire, boiler and Rangemaster, all were new since the house was built and to have put in a different thickness of pipes would have been a big job. Fortunately it wasn't needed but my plumber commented that sometimes people swap their cooker to a more powerful new one but the kitchen fitter never tells them about the extra work that might be needed.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 09/04/2018 19:04

Thank you all so much. Reading all the positive posts has made me feel much more confident about ordering one and also quite excited. I was getting myself quite stressed this morning.

StealthNinjaMum - thank you for your advice on the pipes. Our house is a similar age to yours so I will mention this to the plumber.

We bought a new Rangemaster for a new home 3 years ago. We did have a few teething problems with it, but it was all sorted within the 2 year guarantee, without any cost to us. Finding problems with the Rangemaster, after paying that bit more for a good brand, I wouldn't have recommended them at the time. Another year and a half on, we've had no further problems, and I have found it to be very reliable.

Mrs9C · 09/04/2018 19:19

Just to add, it's a Kitchener we have.

LizzieDarcy1907 · 09/04/2018 19:27

I've had a Brittania range cooker for about 12 years and I can't tell you how impressed with it I've been. It heats up ultra quickly, doesn't slow down too much even with all 6 hob options on and both ovens. I hate going away on holiday and having to use another oven!!

Thiscantreallybehappening · 10/04/2018 09:44

Thank you all so much, this thread has really helped me. I think we have decided to go for the Nexus SE. Just got to decide the colour now Confused Smile

Hi OP, I know that this thread is a few weeks old now, but I'm going through the same angst that you did at the time! Did you get the Nexus SE?

I think I've decided on the Nexus SE dual fuel, but when Which tested the Nexus it was the old model and it only scored 2/5 for baking cakes. This matters to me! I'm wondering if the SE model, with the different oven configuration, is good for baking.

Has anyone baked cakes in the Rangemaster Nexus SE, successfully or otherwise?

TIA

incywincybitofa · 29/04/2018 19:03

I found Which reviews a bit odd to be honest, my Elan only scored 3/5 because the hob needs two hands to light, but for me this was a positive as I had two young children and it meant less risk of gas leaking out
