How do you keep your kitchen floor clean?

Our kitchen floor is perpetually dirty. Our kitchen is at the back of the house with a door to the back "garden" and alley. We don't have an entrance hall at either end of the house (traditional Victorian terrace). We use the back door to go in and out with the pram so lots of dirt gets tracked in on the wheels plus muddy boots. We have a 9 month old so meal times are frequent and messy. I sweep food up constantly but it really seems like it needs a mop 3x a day and I barely manage once a week.

It's never seemed clean since we moved in 18 months ago and it drives me crazy. DS1 will be on the move soon and I'd like it to be cleaner if he's crawling all over it.

I used to have a steam mop but didn't really rate it.... maybe if they came in cordless???

Ecloth mop! Really cheap on amazon. Buy extra cloths - you just chuck them in the washing machine.
You just wet the cloth, attach it to the mop (has velcro attachment) quick once over and you're done. Its so quick. I mop at least once a day now. Plus my 3 year old ds loves it so will go an mop the living room for me Grin
Other big bonus is it takes up virtually no storage space.

Also it does tackle muddy footprints etc well...i use it in our tiled entrance hall and it works miracles.
*i am not on commission from e-cloth mops Smile i just love mine!

I have this problem too! I've had mops in the past but they never really did the trick - they seemed to just move around the gunk. I'm going to look into this ecloth mop.

KirstenRaymonde · 27/03/2018 11:25

Dust pan and brush, and the Method squirt and mop. Literally just squirt and mop, no bucket needed.

brownelephant · 27/03/2018 11:29

a mud catcher rug by the door(s)

Phalarope · 27/03/2018 11:35

Big washable door mat by the back door - park the pram on that. We have a brush outside for cleaning the worst off pram wheels before it comes in. Big oilcloth under the high chair. Then the worst of the muck gets caught on something that can go in the washing machine. Do the floor with combo of vacuum, steam mop, method squirt and mop with a microfibre mop that goes in the washing machine too.

We have a similar set up. I have a 'zone' near the door where shoes and other muddy things come off. If it's really horrid weather then I'll put newspaper down.

Then I just quickly wipe with a cloth and floor cleaner and/or dustpan and brush.

I tend to do it very frequently and it takes 1 minute, rather than do once a day.

OP, what you have described is exactly our house lay out and situation with the pushchair etc.

I vacuum every day and wipe the floor with zoflora (diluted in a spray bottle) and a cloth. I hate going on my hands and knees though so am going to research the e cloth mop!

gigi556 · 27/03/2018 13:30

Ok, so I don't have the ecloth mop but I do have a double sided mop from wilkos that is similar I think. Have done the spray and mop thing but feel it doesn't really clean that well. I probably need to clean it really well and then do the wet/spray method. We started daily cleaning a while back but I'm not sure we lasted a week. I'm so sick of housework! It's never bloody ending!

I've just bought a Flash Power Mop,about 20 quid and it's brilliant. Quick and easy and saves my knees.

ScattyMcScatty · 28/03/2018 09:25

I usually sweep the downstairs as dinner is cooking and then use the method floor cleaner. I use these and it's so fast and easy, I only steam the floors once a week when the kids are asleep and spot clean as and when with dettol wipes.

I'm well aware it's usually only 'surface clean' but we don't eat off the floor so I figure we're mostly good!

We have this problem too. We've got a big microfibre door mat by the back door. Wet muddy footprints still find their way on the floor though. I sweep bits up but also vacuum daily. Just got a cordless Dyson and it's great for just grabbing to do small bits and crumbs.
Then I just mop regularly with a traditional mop and bucket, hot water and floor cleaner like flash or similar. I had a JML magic mop bing but find the traditional one much easier to use and it gets in all the corners better.

purplegreen99 · 31/03/2018 17:58

A big Hug Rug or Turtle Mat would help with trapping dirt from shoes and pram coming indoors. I have dogs and cats and the floors are definitely less dirty since I started using these. Not sure why, but they work better than cheaper mats.

wowfudge · 31/03/2018 18:55

Yes to turtle or dirt trapper mats. We also have a boot tray that muddy shoes and boots go on. Saves mud, wet and melted snow getting on the floor.

Summertime10 · 01/04/2018 09:25

We use a vileda spray mop which works well.

gigi556 · 09/04/2018 19:23

Been discussing this further with my mother who suggested dumping hot water on the floor and scrubbing with hard bristle broom then mopping. Does anyone use one of those sponge mops?

silly question but with the method do you just squirt it out the bottle onto the floor then mop?
