Tried simple stain remover isn’t working

I don't think it's sweat - it's the antiperspirant
I wash my white shirts and DH's on 60 with bio powder and oxy action stuff but even with this, I've recently had to send 4 of my linen shirts to charity rag so I'd like this answered too

LardLizard · 27/03/2018 15:40

Oh yes it probably is the deodorant

i'm not sure you can, can you? I make sure they only get worn once before they go in the wash, to reduce build up, but it's the way that all my DH's shirts end, the under arms eventually get that look and when it's too noticeable it has to go.

I've seen this on countless male colleagues when they put their arms up - my DH worries a lot about getting bo (he's never had it) so he slaps on lots of deoderant.

I had some luck with bleach on white shirts but there's not a whole lot i've ever found to cure it once they're done in.

Dr Beckmann does a spray for underarm stains

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 27/03/2018 15:58

The only way I found was to start when the shirts were new - prevention rather than cure, I've never been able to "save" shirts once it's started. I was at 60 on a long wash with stain remover powder added

Witchofthenorth · 27/03/2018 16:00

My teenage sons shirts are like this, along with the collar grubbiness. I used a glo white sachet, Oxy cleaner and bio detergent. 60 degree wash, came up fab

i believe this stuff is v good with sweaty stuff...www.dettol.co.uk/products/see-all-products/dettol-antibacterial-laundry-cleanser-fresh-cotton/

I've had some success with a paste made from bicarb of soda scrubbed in with an old toothbrush, left to soak, then washed with bio powder and lots of Vanish stain remover chucked in for good measure.

My adult DS had some expensive shirts marked with sweat (it was definitely sweat - he usually wears a cotton T-shirt under his shirts and extra powerful anti-perspirant) but ran out of suitable T-shirts) and I was able to salvage them. Fortunately, even though he had already washed the shirts once, the stains weren't too ingrained that they didn't come out.

White vinegar works well I believe

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 27/03/2018 20:47

I second white vinegar. Soak the stained bits for a while...30 mins...then pop in a hot wash.

Wallywobbles · 27/03/2018 21:47

I was told ammonia and then wash immediately. Not tried it though.

brownelephant · 27/03/2018 21:50

dh needs to soak the shirts in cold water & bio powder. preferably over night.
then wash as normal at 40 or higher.

SprinkleOfInsanity · 27/03/2018 21:52

Napisan gets rid of it. DHs underarms were yellow and thick feeling, then I accidentally washed one of his shirts with the baby stuff, and the shirt came out like new!

MiniMum97 · 27/03/2018 23:53

I've tried loads of things. Once it's built up I think that's it. The best thing is to try to stay at on top of it by spraying an oxygen based cleaners under the pits every time they are washed. Reduceds the problem significantly.

LardLizard · 29/03/2018 16:54

Wow thank for all the replies dh cant believe all the ideas one of these has gotta work 💐💐

Thanks for asking this question OP. We have the same issue over in our house too.

pollywollydoodle · 29/03/2018 17:30

Soak in cold water. Scrub a thick bicarbonate paste in with a Scrubbing brush. Pop in a hot wash. Got 9 months of marks out of a teens school shirtsBlush

LetsGoBitches · 29/03/2018 17:32

Vodka.

Eggyegg · 30/03/2018 05:07

White vinegar.

MaitlandGirl · 30/03/2018 05:11

I’ve currently got some tops soaking in a solution of white vinegar and warm water (1 part white vinegar, 4 parts warm water). It’s fantastic and works really well.

INeedNewShoes · 30/03/2018 05:34

This reminds me of when I was an au pair and did the ironing for a family of 6, which I didn't actually mind apart from the father's gym t shirts; my god the under arms were rank. I can tell you from the smell if I accidentally touched the armpit with an iron that it is most definitely sweat as the sweaty stench would permeate the steam Envy

I'd agree with pp that a paste of bicarb would be my suggestion.

Idobelieveinfairies2018 · 30/03/2018 21:41

the only solution I've found for my excessively sweaty dh is a combo of trimming the underarm hair (the hair makes him sweat more) and salt tablets.
The salt tablets had the added benefit of reducing his foot sweat to normal levels so no more stinky feet either.
My dh has a medical problem thou so unless ur dh has over active sweat glands I don't think the GP would prescribe salt tablets?

I had the same problem for a while and found that putting half a cup of white wine vinegar in with the washing neutralised the smell and got rid of the stain - super successful and it really works!! I hope it helps you :)

Gettingitsortedonewayoranother · 05/04/2018 15:56

Soda Crystals work for me in a shirt wash.

LardLizard · 05/04/2018 16:38

We still haven’t tried any of these yet but will do and will update
