How can I get a RUST mark off a tiled floor and a SCRATCH off a wood floor?

Don't want to resort to uber toxic chemicals if I can avoid it - anyone got a magic formula for getting rust off tiles?

And I just made a deep scratch on the parquet floor in the bedroom moving a piece of furniture - anyone know what I can do to make it invisible (before DH spots it?

Grateful for any pearls of wisdom

Use a wax crayon of the sameish colour to fill in the scratch - it will hide it long enough to deny all knowledge

Oh and stop doing housework, it's how things get damaged.

Rust on ceramic tiles
Googled it for you:

If you have rust (not dirt) on ceramic tiles try the following method (but always test in an inconspicuous area before cleaning all the tiles). Squeeze a small amount of lemon juice into a glass. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid and mix thoroughly. Cut a fine sponge or cloth into strips big enough to cover the stain. Saturate the pieces of cloth/sponge with the lemon juice mix. Place these wet pieces onto the stain and wipe off any excess solution that runs onto the surrounding tile. Leave for a few hours and then inspect. If the stain is still there repeat the procedure. Rinse well with water. Bleach products can accelerate the formation of rust on some poorly glazed tiles. Try to avoid using such cleaners on these problem surfaces.)

Wow Bibi, thanks! Lemon juice - cunning. I fear DH won't be fooled for long by the crayon, but it will buy me time

Agree entirely about housework being bad, I generally try to get away with the absolute minimum.

Get some varnish and go over the scratch so it's less noticeable. It'll darken the wood. To do a proper repair is more time consuming...

frenchleave · 09/05/2007 14:27

Thanks mumpbump. Any varnish?

And when you say time consuming... what does a proper repair involve?

You would have to get some woodfiller - you can buy it in DIY stores, light, medium or dark according to the colour of your floor - apply it to the scratch with a pallet knife. Sand back once dry and then stain/varnish to match the floor.

If you just put some varnish on it, you would need to check whether the varnish previously used is clear or coloured. I guess it might not be varnished, but oiled or waxed instead...

I think it is sealed - we can mop it with water so it's definitely not waxed/oiled.

Totally clueless, me. Your help much appreciated!

get a crayon the same colur as the floor and melt in the microwave. Then dab it on the floor and let it dry

rabbleraiser · 09/05/2007 16:35

Or just move the piece of furniture back!

A walnut, cut in half, and rubbed onto the scratch works on furniture, but it probably wouldn't be man enough for a deep floor scratch.

frenchleave · 09/05/2007 16:57

Unfortunately the scratch is right in the middle of the room so I can't hide it under the furniture.

Like the walnut idea (though I presume it's the walnut itself, not the shell I should be using?), it might work as the scratch isn't as deep as I first thought. Maybe if I melted the crayon first to fill the groove then did the walnut thing it'd be sorted... will report back.

Thanks to all.

Sorry, Frenchleave .. whether you use a walnut or brazil nut as per Califrau's suggestion, you use the fruit of the nut, (the nut nut), not the shell ... shell.

Ho hum - what time's he coming home?

frenchleave · 09/05/2007 18:34

Soon! And I've only got cashews!
