Has anyone managed to keep bathroom mould at bay?

Had our new bathroom in, only start using it at Christmas.

The tile grout is already starting to go discoloured. This is despite weekly cleaning.

What does everyone do to get rid of it/prevent it?

How's the ventilation ?
I've never had this

CrabappleBiscuit · 09/03/2018 11:29

Use hg mould cleaner, squeegee shower after using. Open window after shower. Keep the room warm .

We painted in bathroom paint. Maybe get higher power fan, that's next on our list

We get mould, but it's kept away if we keep the window open, and I use pure citric acid crystals (diluted in water) to clean twice a week.

Dry the walls and grout after every shower/bath, Open windows daily, use bleach when cleaning. I use astonish mould and mildew spray and let it sit for half an hour while I do the rest of the house.

We've got an extractor fan which automatically comes on with the lights. There a huge towel radiator which is on all the time. The house is always lovely and warm.

I've started opening the window a lot.

We used bathroom paint but it's only the tile grout that is going mouldy/discoloured..

Thanks, sounds like some mould type cleaning spray and more window opening.

Drying tiles each evening after everyone has showered I guess.

Might have trouble getting the rest of the household on board with that one!

I have this issue in our shower. Sealant going mouldy despite having a fan, keeping window open, using squegee. Will make a note of thesprays recommended.

Put them on mould cleaning duty and they will soon understand cause madness effect Grin

I keep bathroom windows open all the time, except when the house is empty. Even when it's cold outside, the window is slightly open. Good ventilation is essential in bathrooms.

MaggieFS · 09/03/2018 13:21

Same problem around the sealant. Doesn't matter how much we dry it or try to keep it clean. Drive me mad.

TefalTester123 · 09/03/2018 13:25

Is there more of a problem because you shower in the evening, then the house is at its coldest overnight? Is there a good overrun on your extractor fan?

curlyrebel · 09/03/2018 13:42

I have a steam cleaner with a water spray attachment that is great for getting troublesome mould off my bathroom tiles. If I use spray I'm always scrubbing away and it doesn't seem to make a huge difference.

Laucu · 09/03/2018 14:10

My bathroom is awful. It's always colder than the rest of the house because it's an extension.

I always leave the window open for at least an hour after showering. In the colder months I have to bleach the walls, ceiling and grout.

I bought some hg mould cleaner after reading great reviews but it didn't work. I suspect the mould was there for many years before we moved in so even the toughest cleaner won't shift it.

Laucu · 09/03/2018 14:12

I meant to add, I think the trick is to keep on top of it and clean it off regularly. I've managed to keep it at bay in my bathroom but previous tenants haven't bothered!

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/03/2018 16:37

I open windows wide after every shower and use a marcher window vac to dry the tiles.

No mould and I rarely heat that room. The trickle vents open all the time on the window.

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 09/03/2018 19:40

astonish mould and mildew spray is the absolute best thing for cleaning grout up with. It turned solid black grout back to white in my last house (rental that was in a filthy condition when I moved in).

A simple thing worth trying to stop new mould forming, is using the showerhead to hose down tiles at end of shower.

Hg mould cleaner. Brilliant stuff, kept my bathroom looking new for the 7 years we had it (moved). Try not to breathe it in though as it’s quite potent.
