What do you do with clothes 'in between wears'?!

Pumpkintopf · 03/03/2018 18:57

For example- when I get home from work I change into eg jeans and jumper which I might wear for a couple of days as only worn for a short time after work.

In the past I've 'stored' these on a chair in the bathroom but am renovating bathroom so want it to look clear and tidy - have also recently renovated bedroom so don't want a chair of clothes in there really either!

Any bright ideas?! Thanks

@Speedy85 I like the look of that! Would be possibly easier than hooks for some things and keep them tidy. Thanks!

Ah Schroedinger's laundry.

Drives me nuts. We had the chair. Now we have the bannister. All bad tbh!

ginghamstarfish · 03/03/2018 23:42

I have a coat/ hatstand, one of those bentwood types, in the bedroom for this very purpose. DH folds his stuff on a chair but I've always had a hatstand!

CointreauVersial · 03/03/2018 23:47

I put them away!

You ask how I keep track of what has been worn or not - why does it matter? When I take something off, if it is clean enough to be worn again, it goes back in the cupboard; if not, it goes in the washbasket. I don't need to "remember" how many times I've worn it, I just check if it is stained/whiffy/stale and act accordingly.

Tbh I have to limit myself with "hardly worn" items or my room would be overrun!

I have one set of "dossing around the house" clothes (usually a pair of sweatpants and an oversized comfy jumper) on the go at any one time, one set of work uniform and one "out of the house" outfit and that is all I allow myself to have "lightly worn" at any one time.

I'd rather wear the same outfit for a couple of hours a day for two or three days straight then put it in the wash and start a new outfit than have half a dozen outfits all worn for one day just draped around the bedroom.

If it is a work day I will go from my pjs straight into my work uniform. When I get home, if it is a late shift,I will stay in my uniform until I have a shower and put my pjs back on. If it is an early shift I will come home and change out of my uniform into either my "dossing around" clothes (If I'm not planning to go out again) or my "out of the house" clothes.

If I put my out of the house clothes on then, unless they get visibly dirty/sweaty (and I usually wear a vest top under shirts/tops so they're rarely sweaty meaning I almost always get at least two wears out of any top), I will wear those same clothes for a couple of days before they go straight into the wash.

That way I don't build up a floordrobe and means I always know that if I am not actively wearing something it is either clean and ready to wear in the wardrobe, is in the laundry basket as it is too dirty to wear or is in the process of being laundered and isn't available to wear.

Pumpkintopf · 04/03/2018 15:11

@melj1213 these are good ideas, and I agree I need to be far more disciplined!

I have a set of hooks where I hang up yesterday's clothes for 24h, after that I check to see if they need washing, and if not they go back in the wardrobe when i use the hooks for the next set of clothes. If a top is absolutely pristine it may have been ironed inside out, and i leave it that way when I put it away, so I can tell it is fresh.

noenergy · 04/03/2018 15:37

Over door hooks. Don't like putting worn clothes back in the wardrobe

CointreauVersial · 04/03/2018 16:00

Noenergy - if I didn't put worn clothes back in the wardrobe, I'd have empty wardrobes and clothing stacked everywhere. I would say that 70% of what's in my wardrobe has been worn once or more.

LittleWingSoul · 05/03/2018 01:31

Yes I think the issue with putting worn clothes back in cupboards/wardrobes is that I often don't realise how much my clothes smell of cooking until the next morning when I go to put it on again.

Currently they get draped on the end of the bed (the opposite of a headboard - footboard?!) which is a crap solution as they often slide to the floor during the night. DH puts his clothes on top of the laundry basket which I find infuriating!

INeedNewShoes · 05/03/2018 01:38

Over the banister or on a chair in my bedroom.

When I lived in a studio flat I had a box under the bed that I folded semi-worn clothes in so that they were out of sight if I had friends around.

AntiHop · 05/03/2018 01:41

Hanger on outside of the wardrobe, hanging on handle.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 05/03/2018 15:12

I have a couple of hooks on the end of a wardrobe (on the outside). I don’t put worn clothes away until they’ve aired a bit. So today I cane from work and my jumper went in the wash, my skirt on a hanger in the hook and I’ve put on clean jeans, t shirt and hoodie. At bedtime the skirt will go into the wardrobe and the jeans and hoodie will hang on the hook for after work tomorrow.

Keiki · 05/03/2018 15:16

I have a small Ottoman box like this www.dunelm.com/product/foldable-grey-cube-ottoman-1000111409
next to the bed to put part worn clothes in. So much neater than on a chair that it inevitably falls off!

Pumpkintopf · 05/03/2018 20:35

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou and @Keiki I like both those ideas, thank you!

Google 'butler stand'. I am a bit of a tidy freak so put all clothes away but my DH always has a pile on the go (that, in his old place, always ended up on the floor). I swear getting one of these stands was relationship saving when we first moved in together!

ILoveDolly · 05/03/2018 23:21

"The Chair"

TheFlis12345 · 05/03/2018 23:21

Sorry, just realised the correct term is 'valet stand', not butler. I knew it was something like that!

sproutsandparsnips · 05/03/2018 23:23

We call it the 'on half chair' and it mainly benefits dh....

KateAdiesEarrings · 05/03/2018 23:27

I use a chair or on a hook on the door but I love some of the ideas on this thread.

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 06/03/2018 13:52

Google 'butler stand'.

I think you just changed my life - no more floordrobe. Im going to buy a Valet Stand.

HuskyMcClusky · 06/03/2018 13:55

I chuck them on a chair in the walk-in wardrobe, out of sight.

ScattyCharly · 06/03/2018 13:57

I hang mine on a hook on the back of a door.

Pumpkintopf · 07/03/2018 07:58

Valet stand! Good idea! Also like chair in wardrobe-still a chair but out of sight!
