I've got a plastic tub that had rice in that's gone mouldy.

Can I clean it with hot soapy water and a sterilizing solution then use it for food again?

Or should I just bin it?

Eek!! I would chuck the whole thing out. Don't even open lid!!

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 21/02/2018 17:39

Oh shit really? It's been Sat in the sink soaking for an hour!

Seriously? Hmm
Just clean it out and re-use it and stop adding to the excess plastic mountain.

justpoppngby · 21/02/2018 17:42

I don't really think it warrants sterilisation! Lol I'd just give it wash out, and not dump more plastic crap into the waste.

Adoodoobydoo · 21/02/2018 17:43

Just wash it?

Bluedoglead · 21/02/2018 17:44

I’d scrape the crud out and bung it in the dishwasher. If no dishwasher, drop of fairy and scalding water out of the kettle, let it sit, maybe mild bleach solution and soak it over night. I certainly wouldn’t throw the container out.

Adoodoobydoo · 21/02/2018 17:45

Sorry that wasn't a question. I'm just confused about the fact that some would it bin it rather than wash and resuse.

GrainneWail · 21/02/2018 17:57

Another hot wash and use here.

PurpleCrowbar · 21/02/2018 18:00

Rinse out then dishwasher/hand wash with hot soapy water. It'll be fine!

I have 3dc taking various pots of stuff into school daily for lunch (pasta, sandwiches, fruit, salad). If I binned every pot that spent a couple of days festering in a locker I'd be knee deep in them every month Grin

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 21/02/2018 18:08

It's been 17 days if that changes anything.

Not for me! I'm a slattern

Thistlebelle · 21/02/2018 18:19

Moldy rice was in the container for 17 days?

I’d bin personally.

Starryskiesinthesky · 21/02/2018 18:20

Just eat it!

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 21/02/2018 18:21

So 2 say bin it and 6 say keep it.

I'll keep it and curse you when I get ill.

Eat it? That's a new one, eat the mouldy rice or the tub?

You'll have a hard job getting rid of the smell from the plastic, maybe give it the scrubbing of its life, a couple of goes in the dishwasher, and a blast with your kitchen chemical of choice, then leave it with the lid off for a few days. Then put the lid back on, leave it a few more days, and if it whiffs, then life's too short - chuck it!
Or keep dog biscuits in it, they won't care Grin

MyKingdomForBrie · 21/02/2018 18:28

I wouldn’t even consider chucking it. No bloody wonder we have such a landfill problem.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/02/2018 18:47

I'd wash it and pour boiling water over it to kill any germs.

MacaroniPenguin · 21/02/2018 19:45

I'd wash and Milton it.

CrockedPot · 21/02/2018 20:33

Wouldn’t even think twice! Just wash it!

Justanotherzombie · 21/02/2018 20:34

Just wash it.

Thelampshadelady · 21/02/2018 21:43

For goodness sake. A good wash will be fine. I’m sure the world wasn’t this precious over dirty containers years ago.

wowfudge · 21/02/2018 22:24

Quite - just wash it and let it dry. It'll be fine. I have many years' experience of forgetting about leftovers and chucking out mouldy food, washing the container and re-using it. Still here and have - touch wood - never had food poisoning.
