Is having a gas oven quite unusual these days

I’ve still got a gas oven but I’m beginning to think I might be the only one.

A lot of recipes I see etc often don’t even bother saying what gas mark to put the cake in, it’s just “bake at 225 degrees” or whatever.

I’m forever having to google what the equivalent gas mark would be.

My gas oven works just fine. But why has everyone gone electric??

it's easier to set a timer in an electric oven so you can set things up to cook if you're out. You don't need to be there to light the flame. Maybe gives a more even temperature within the oven too. My mum still has a gas oven. I think its more unpredictable

My oven is electric with a gas hob, the perfect combination of both.

I would say that gas ovens were unusual these days. Electric fan ovens generally give a more even heat/cook.

dementedpixie · 21/02/2018 13:11

We also have an electric oven and gas hob

Aragog · 21/02/2018 13:12

We have electric oven and a gas hob. I much prefer gas hobs than electric ones especially in terms of responsiveness, but prefer the functionality of an electric oven.

Interesting, I’ve never once considered needing a timer delay for anything that goes in my oven but hey ho. I’ll stick with it till in conks out. Grin

I prefer dual fuel cookers too. I'm not sure I'd know how to use either a gas oven or an electric hob!

They had plenty of gas ovens in Currys when I was wandering round yesterday so people must still be buying them.

MrsPestilence · 21/02/2018 14:41

My gas oven has a delayed timer function.

We have a printed out chart for oven temp conversions. C, F and Gas mk, also very useful for American recipes.

My oven is gas, it's less than 3 years old.

I really wanted a gas one and had to hunt for a suitable one. I found they were a lot pricer than electric, maybe that's why?

PuppyMonkey · 21/02/2018 14:53

Mine’s about ten years old, still going strong. I wondered if they still even sold them, so good to hear they’re still in the shops.

I've got a gas oven, I've never had any different.

I did try an electric oven but I couldn't get on with it.

We've got all gas, we considered a dual fuel but they were extremely expensive and hard to find one that wasn't range-sized. I use a shelf thermometer for baking so use the electric measurements in recipes, other things I have just got the hang of over time, It also very much depends what height you've got the shelves. The only thing I find problematic is deep cakes as the top cooks faster than the bottom.
