If your tumble dryer actually DRIES clothes please let me know what kind it is!

We bought a fairly expensive Samsung tumble dryer two years ago and I've cursed it every day since as it is utterly rubbish. It does not dry clothes except on one setting (took a long time to find that setting) and even then it only works if you put it on twice in a row, so it takes about 6-7 hours to dry a very normal load. It got good reviews at the time but has since been discontinued and has a smattering of reviews from those with the same experience as me. The 'sensor dry' aspect is clearly hopeless.

We need a new dryer before baby number 2 arrives (v soon!). I'm happy to go cheap and cheerful and ideally don't want any sensor crap, I'd be happy with 'hot, warm, cold' and a time setting. Not sure if that kind even still exists?

Anyway if you have a dryer that actually dries clothes can you let me know what kind it is? Thanks!

PS not Samsung Angry

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’re looking for tumble dryers, we’ve recently updated our best tumble dryer page with lots of great options rated by Mumsnet users, plus info on whether a heat pump or condenser dryer is best for your home. We hope you find it useful.

Second the cheapo Indesit. Timer and 2 heat settings. Works perfectly. (Similarly for washing machines snd dishwashers - the fewer fancy programmes the better as you only ever end up using the same couple of settings!)

We have a bosch. Replaced the last one reluctantly and it was only when we tried this one we realised how crap the last one had been. We wash the sheets and get them back on same day. With the old drier we had to get up extra early to leave enough time. This one dries in no time at all and it sound fierce while it dries :o

PattiStanger · 20/02/2018 20:43

What did Samsung say when you complained? It sounds like a dodgy drier.

I have a Bosch and the first one I had was like yours, wouldn't dry anything, I complained and got a replacement which has been working fine for about 5 years now I think. It wasn'y hugely expensive, less than £300 iirc

LadyLapsang · 20/02/2018 21:52

Another vote for a Siemens condenser. I don't use it for clothes as I have an indoor line in the futility room, only towels and cotton bed linen / tea towels. It drys perfectly and warms up the futility room to dry the washing on the line.

Bosch classic for us too.so quick for things like uniforms. Used every day in cooler weather. I managed to snap the . Handle off but a £5 original part and an online video and even I could fix it! Would definitely replace with the same. Easy to empty water container and to defluff.

I’ve got the beko one that popchyk shared. It’s about 8/9 years old and been fabulous. It’s just started to fail (door seal leaving black marks on sheets), and I’m thinking I’ll probably replace with the same one, as it’s cheap and reliable!

Alfiemoon1 · 21/02/2018 09:24

I’ve got a cheap white knight one it dries well and I’ve had it years not sure on the energy rating. They were all pretty low when I got it. Previous one was hotpoint and had loads of problems with it

BetterEatCheese · 21/02/2018 09:25

Beko Condenser - it also sense when the clones are dry and beeps (endlessly!)

flobella · 21/02/2018 11:50

I have a White Knight one that is over a decade old and is fine. I wonder if we had a more up-to-date one if it might be more economical but I think I will wait until it actually breaks before we replace it. Just out of interest, if you were drying a king size duvet cover, fitted sheet and 4 pillow cases, how long would you expect that to take. Mine takes over 2 hours to do that and I am not sure if that is a long time?

I have a variety of Beko appliances and find they are very good value for money so I will probably choose a Beko tumble dryer when the time comes.

I have heard quite a few horror stories through social media of Hotpoint tumble dryers catching fire and also known faults occurring that then take Hotpoint months to fix and causing a lot of inconvenience. Caroline Hirons, for example, recently posted a thing on her Instagram stories about her Hotpoint dryer catching fire in front of her eyes - lucky she was at home. I remember my mum having a lot of Hotpoint and Zanussi appliances and them being very poor so I would avoid them but obviously everyone has their own experiences and I'm sure lots of other people would say they are great.

If it was me, I think I would go Beko (our washing machine and fridges are fab) and maybe opt for an extra warranty.

PuppyMonkey · 21/02/2018 11:59

I have a White Knight one too. It was rated good for energy efficiency when I bought it, but that was in 1998 so not sure if it would still pass the test. Grin

Still dries my clothes perfectly after about an hour and a bit on low setting, so suits me just fine.

sportyfool · 21/02/2018 12:34

It sounds faulty , I can't imagine why it would take 7 hours otherwise . Things are just not made that shit .
I'd call Samsung to be honest .
Ours is a faulty basic condenser and works fine . It's plumbed into my utility so the water goes down the drain rather than having to empty the vessel .

sportyfool · 21/02/2018 12:35

Did it try at first because there are two filters on a tumble dryer and they need cleaning . This will slow us down considerably

tellitlikeitispls · 21/02/2018 12:40

Ours works fine. We keep it in the garage as its vented, but I've had it for 10 years now and it dries reliably. Its an AEG. Cost us about £200.

womaninatightspot · 21/02/2018 12:43

We have a candy 10kg it's chap and effective from ao.

sportyfool · 21/02/2018 12:48

Work not try

NewImprovedNinja · 21/02/2018 12:48

Mine's a vented AEG that I've had quite a few years now and it has a sensor setting that works fine although you can also set it on a 20 minute timer too.
Must admit, I rarely use it these days as I've fitted an airier in my hot press/airing cupboard and clothes dry really quickly when I put them in there.

May09Bump · 21/02/2018 13:34

AEG condenser works brilliant. We have had white knight ones before & they have been fine too.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/02/2018 14:52

Bosch condenser. We've had it for about 5 years. I had to fiddle about with the sensor setting when I first got it but it's perfect now. It has a timed setting, can't override the sensor but unless the washing is bone dry it doesn't stop.

I use those dryer ball things and the washing takes about half the time to dry that it says on the display.

Growingboys · 21/02/2018 15:00

Miele condenser from ao.com

Love it. We inherited old Miele stuff with our house and of the three (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer), only one of them has broken seven years later, so I got the same again. They're amazing and must have been going years.

SoftSheen · 21/02/2018 15:00

We recently got this Indesit vented drier, only £179 and works perfectly. Dries a load in 60-80 minutes.

wysteriafloribunba · 21/02/2018 15:04

Siemens. It's a low energy one so acceptable from on environmental perspective. Was expensive but worth every penny. Dries perfecly even heavy loads like bed linen. I've probably had it 8 plus years. No issues.

confusion39 · 21/02/2018 15:09

My friend bought a pricey sensor dry one and she says it's rubbish..I bought an old small one off a friend (creda) vented and other than the vent hose needing to be longer it's fab!

FinallyFree123456789 · 21/02/2018 15:14

I’ve got a beko Drcs68w condenser dryer.
Longest it has ever taken is 1hour 22 mins and that was with towels on an extra day setting.
Never had any problems with it, not sure how long I’ve had it but it’s over 3 years at least xx

italiancortado · 21/02/2018 15:15

Why on earth did you not contact Samsung rather than cursing it from day one?

That's utterly ridiculous. You bought a dryer that doesn't dry. I wouldn't have sent it back.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 21/02/2018 16:00

A White Knight here too. We've had it for years. It's very basic but I'd buy another. I had a Hotpoint before that which was a massive pain in the arse and had to go back.
