Cleaning a cotton rag rug

My cat was sick on my rag rug. Its too big for the washing machine. Because of the weave i can't get the stain out by scrubbing it. I've no bath to wash it in. Any ideas?

Do you have a launderette near to you ?

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 17/02/2018 18:08

Laundrette

chuckiecheese · 17/02/2018 18:15

Gentle wash I washing machine with biological powder or biotex 😉

Spookle · 17/02/2018 18:31

In the bath with washing powder and stomp with your feet?

Spookle · 17/02/2018 18:32

Oh shit sorry, just saw you have no bath! A friend's bath?

WindyWednesday · 17/02/2018 18:34

They wash easily, but take ages to dry. Find a laundrette near you, they will have big enough washers.

carriewintermeadow · 17/02/2018 18:35

No laundrette nearby. No car. No bath. Too big for the washing machine.

Do you have a sink? or a friend who can help you.

carriewintermeadow · 17/02/2018 18:41

Its big for the sink. No friends to help.

Well I think you have two options. Bin it and move on or live with the stain.

carriewintermeadow · 17/02/2018 19:01
Confused

Do you have access to a carpet cleaning machine? Borrow one and try that.

Or could you cut the rug in 2 and wash it separately (I had to do this with a huge duvet that the cat was sick on years ago. It wouldn't fit in the machine and at the time I was a poor student so couldn't afford a new one)

WindyWednesday · 17/02/2018 19:08

Turn it over so you can’t see the stain?

MrsPear · 17/02/2018 19:51

Do you have any kind of outside space which is not grass? A clean hard broom? Bucket?

If so it will be hard work but put rug outside. Wear wellies if you worry about having wet feet. Use bucket full of hot water, soap and broom to clean rug. Use more fresh water to rinse. Pick first thing and a sunny spot - so you can hang and dry. If you have another person handy - they can help to wring.

I have helped clean rigs in h’s home country like this - harder work than usual mind.

Good idea thanks!

Or hang it over a fence or gate and hose it off. Squirt with detergent and hose again. I've done that lots of times.

carriewintermeadow · 18/02/2018 02:11

I've no hose.

I would spot clean by putting the affected part into the kitchen sink. Turn the rug stain side down and use the tap to blast/rinse all the residue downwards/out. Turn rug stain side up, use a solution of washing powder and warm water to wash properly, then rinse and dry (airing cupboard would work well if the rug will fit)..

Poppins2016 · 18/02/2018 02:34

I forgot to mention...

Even if aiming to spot clean and get just a small area wet using the sink, the fabric will inevitably soak up more water than you'd like...

Layer a couple of bath towels on top/underneath of the rug, then roll tightly in order to soak up the extra water.

carriewintermeadow · 18/02/2018 02:58

Thanks Smile I'll try that tomorrow.

I've no hose.
Okay.

Laucu · 18/02/2018 09:05

Could you just wash the affected area, rather than the whole thing? Perhaps just soak the area using a washing up bowl.
